Organizers of the 2024 Paris Olympics budgeted about $8 billion when it won its bid in 2017, and the city has since upped its budget by several billion dollars. If the final cost stays in that ballpark, Paris will host the cheapest Summer Games in decades.

With this year's Olympic Games approaching the starting block, we look at how the numbers stack up. As events go, there’s none bigger than the Olympic Games. It attracts the most participants, the biggest audiences and, of course, the highest price tag. Paris 2024 in July will be no different. Organisers expect 300,000 people to line the banks of the river Seine to watch the opening ceremony – 10,500 athletes will compete and 20,000 businesses registered to tender for games contracts. For 17 days it will take over the French capital and the world of sports, attracting a potential worldwide audience of four billion viewers. Final figures for the Paris Games are yet to be realised, but estimates are that it’ll cost US$9.6 billion. Click here to read more: https://lnkd.in/ezefS6uX

Massive participation in the BRICS Games 11-23 june 2024 in Kazan-Russia The BRICS Games are organized by countries belonging to the economic association BRICS, now in its fifth edition in Kazan, Russia, in connection with Russia's chairmanship of BRICS in 2024, with participants from 89 countries, after the last one was held in the South African city of Durban in 2023. BRICS is an intergovernmental organisation of eight countries (Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Russia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates) whose initial aim was to highlight investment opportunities. However, the grouping has evolved into a cohesive geopolitical bloc, with their governments meeting annually at formal summits and coordinating multilateral policies since 2009. Bilateral relations between the BRICS are largely based on the principles of non-interference, equality and mutual benefit. The BRICS Games are an annual gathering of member countries, now in its fifth edition. Kazan, known as the "third capital of Russia", has taken over the relay from Goa in India (2016), Guangzhou in China (2017) and Johannesburg (2018) and Durban (2023), both in South Africa, while the 2022 edition was held online from 1 to 30 September 2022 after a break due to Covid. Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan Republic, has prepared a full programme with 27 sports modalities in a two-week event until 23 June. I made a short video-compilation of the many things that are happening during the Brics Games 2024. https://lnkd.in/eJYSDEVn https://lnkd.in/eRKkGtde Oleg Matytsin, who was Russia's sports minister until mid-May, said while organizing the games that they were not intended as a substitute for the Olympics. “We consider that the Olympic Games have no alternative.” he said. But even the games' name carries a strong alternative connotation. BRICS — short for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — has evolved from a group promoting investments into a geopolitical bloc positioning itself as a counterweight to North America and the European Union. It now also includes Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. One of the features of these Games is that in addition to the traditional Olympic disciplines, the organisers of the event have included acrobatic rock 'n' roll, breaking, basketball and football double-header, for example. The BRICS Games 2024 are considered a Celebration of Sport and Friendship… Due to the success of the initial games, organizers decided to expand the traditional program to include national sports from the participating countries. This expansion aims to highlight the cultural diversity and sporting traditions of each nation. The main goal of the BRICS Games is to strengthen friendly sports ties between nations, promoting principles of equality, non-discrimination, and equal access for all athletes to compete.

Olympics estimated to have average overspend of 156% of what has initially been budgeted, it's enough to make Olympics the most expensive sports organisation. And this raises questions like, Is it really profitable for countries to host such mega-projects? There are a lot to consider about, especially for developing countries.

Was interviewed by Cyril Ip for his new piece in South China Morning Post (#scmp) on how athletes from #taiwan have been received at the #asiangames in #hangzhou. My full remarks: Question: At the Asian Games opening ceremony, Taiwanese athletes entered the stage in front of a backdrop referring to the team as “Chinese Taipei” - the term commonly used in international tournaments for groups representing the island. But as the host introduced the team, it was referred to as “China Taipei”, in a similar fashion to how the administrative regions are referred to - “Hong Kong, China” and “Macao, China”. Was this arrangement deliberate? If yes, what was the reasoning behind it? Answer: Since at least 2002, the official term on the mainland is the one used by the Asian Games host: China Taipei (中国台北). Outside China it is more common to hear Chinese Taipei (中华台北). Exceptions on the mainland were made during the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and these have been attributed to "niceties." However, at last year's Winter Olympics in Beijing, China Taipei (中国台北) was used. Consequently, we shouldn't read anything into the team's introduction in Hangzhou this year that we don't already know: namely, that relations today are not a positive as they were in 2008, and not singificantly different from what they were last year.
