I am excited to presenting at the virtual conference of the New England Consortium of the National Career Development Association State Career Development Associations on First Generation Employees: Best Practices for Workforce Development for Immigrant/Refugee High School Students. Here is the link to attend: https://lnkd.in/gMWmBURu Presentation details: We often talk about how to support first generation college students, but what about first generation employees? In this presentation you will learn best practices for workforce development with high school students, specifically students who are immigrants or refugees. Topics covered include how to break down career skills in a way that is culturally relevant and trauma informed. You will learn how to work with young people from start to end: from making sure they are eligible to work with the documents required, the application process including how to explain the fields on job applications, jobs that work well for students with limited English proficiency, how to coach students on following up on their application and interview preparation, filling out hiring paperwork, explaining pay stubs, and what is expected at a job. We will break down “professionalism” and what that means including expectations for types of communication, problem solving, community norms, decision making, and showing characteristics such as demonstrating initiative, flexibility and reliability. This workshop will help prepare you to work with anyone in their first job, but especially young people who are immigrants or refugees.

Recently attended the Association for Career and Technical Education Region IV in Albuquerque, NM. The states included in this region are: New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas. I was introduced to CTE last year at their national conference. Many of the members informed about their regional conferences so why not check one out. These are smaller and more intimate conferences where you can get more time with the associates of those regions. I strongly recommend attending regional conferences. Networking! When at the conferences, I do my best to meet with every vendor, if they are at their booth. Ironically enough, the booth next to me was staffed by Colt Almodova. Colt grew up on Oahu and attended the prestigious Kamehameha Schools. Then received his degree from Arizona State University and now is in sales at Advanced Technology Consultants. The other theme that keeps appearing is how Careers By the People ties tightly into the career clusters of the CTE Programs. Celebrating One year as a Full-Time employee at Loyalist College 🎉 Loyalist College has always been a home for me, a place where I have studied, volunteered, worked part-time, served in student government and enjoyed summer campus jobs. Today marks a special milestone - completing my first year as a full-time employee at my dream workplace. Never did I imagine I'd work a 9 to 5 job, but when this opportunity at Loyalist College came up. I couldn't resist. The feeling of pride I had on my first day, 8:45 pm, August 17, 2018, when I arrived from Toronto to Belleville, remains just as strong today. As an international student, my journey has been both challenging and rewarding. From being silent in my first two weeks of classes due to language barriers to now speaking confidently as a guest speaker, mentor, and presenter, I have grown immensely. This transformation is thanks to the incredible staff, professors, and mentors at Loyalist College who have guided and supported me. #TeamLoyalist I am grateful to everyone who has crossed my path and contributed to my growth. Loyalist College and my colleagues have given me a reason to embrace the 9-5 work life, and I am excited for many more years to come. 🚀 Lessons Learned 🚀: 1.
