The complexity of the European Space Environment The main actors, apart from the industry are: ESA, EUSPA, EUMETSAT, and naturally the National Space Agencies, particularly those of: France, Germany, Italy, the UK, Spain, and some others. ESA and the main national agencies (F, G, I and UK) have technical management resources and the others subcontract this activity mainly to ESA. One peculiarity of ESA has been the geographical return rule, by which the industrial return of any country should be proportional to the budgetary contribution of this country, something not applicable to the other actors. Since early 1990’s the EU Commission has been disputing the lead role of ESA in the space activities. Periodically numerous meetings were organised among them, also inviting industrial representatives, trying to clarify their respective roles. The industrial representatives attended the meetings without knowing what was expected from them in those meetings. The Galileo programme was the opportunity for the EU to create the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency (GSA) in 2004, established as the European Union Agency for Space Programmes (EUSPA) on May 12, 2021. (EUSPA) is charged with supporting the implementation of the EU Space Programme, consisting mainly of the European Earth Observation (Copernicus), the European Global Navigation Satellite System (Galileo), the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS), the European Union Governmental Satellite Communications (GOVSATCOM) and Space Situational Awareness (SSA). The relationship between ESA and EUSPA is managed by a Framework Agreement established in 2004. ESA oversees the roll-out of new satellite technology and architecture of the systems that provide the EU’s various space services. roll-out of new satellite technology and architecture of the systems that provide the EU’s various space services. This complex scheme is challenged from time to time, and recently new studies dealing with potential new schemes have been detected.

Alively round table today on Space and the environment hosted by the French National Assembly and by madame la depute Cecile Rilhac I was sharing the panel floor with CNES Frederic Bretar and PROMETHEE Space Olivier Piepsz. I highlighted how ESA partnership with its with Member States create benefits at national level and help move European industry and science forward. French space industry has a prominent role in many eo projects: France is heavily involved in Future EO and Copernicus #Sentinel3, #Sentinel6 as well as in the next generation of Sentinels. Multiple French research institutes and industrial actors are also involved in data quality and calibration/Validation operations for many missions. But this data is not for the sake of building satellites : it is essential to the support international efforts and agreements like the Paris COP 21 agreement and UN's International Methane Emissions Observatory and better manage our environmental challenges.

News from the European Space Agency's ERS-2 Mission! 🚀 With the anticipated reentry of the ERS-2 satellite into Earth's atmosphere in February 2024, we reflect on its remarkable contributions since its launch in April 1995. As a successor to the ERS-1 mission, ERS-2 revolutionized Earth Observation with its C-band radar payload and interferometric capabilities, paving the way for advancements in InSAR technology 👉 https://lnkd.in/dKN8-6XU At DARES, we owe much of our expertise to these heritage missions. Despite data availability every 35 days initially, we successfully launched our first commercial services in the early 2000s for civil applications and the private industry, leveraging data from ERS and ENVISAT ESA satellite missions. 🛰️ Today, Earth Observation's future looks promising with numerous private and public satellite initiatives underway. Notably, the impending launch of Sentinel-1C&D, building upon Sentinel-1A and B, promises more frequent and systematic global data coverage. 🌍 At DARES, we recognize the importance of continuous data coverage in delivering accurate monitoring services. That's why we've developed a unique capability: providing weekly reporting in near real-time after each satellite pass. This innovation sets us apart as a highly competitive alternative to traditional surveying methods. 📊 For more information about our Rapid Monitoring Service, please contact us at [email protected]. #darestechnology #monitoring #subsidence #earthobservation #ESA #ERS #insar

And here is the first (uncalibrated) image of #PVCC!
🥳 We're proud to share the first uncalibrated image of #PVCC! 🗺️💚 Only 3⃣ days after its successful launch, our #remotesensing experts were able to produce this remarkable view over the southwestern #Alps! Expert Iskander B.: "At the moment Aerospacelab is checking quality of the platform. As soon as this commissioning phase is completed, we can start the payload commissioning to calibrate the geometry and radiometry, and ensure accurate payload data. Although further calibration is needed, this first image is already beyond our expectation." 📢 #PVCC is a European Space Agency - ESA mission powered by Aerospacelab and VITO, with OIP Space Instruments, and the active support of ESA/ESEC and SSC - Swedish Space Corporation, funded by Belgian Science Policy Office. ⭐ We invite applications to tender for the ESA Commercialisation Ambassador in Italy - (BASS and Earth Watch InCubed-2) 2024 – 2027. The ESA Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) programme aims to enable companies, especially those from non-space domains, to create new businesses or enhance existing ones by integrating space capabilities – Earth observation, satellite navigation and telecommunications and human space flight technologies. InCubed stands for ‘Investing in Industrial Innovation’ and is a Public Private Partnership co-funding programme run by the ESA Φ-lab, part of the Earth Observation Programme. InCubed focuses on developing innovative and commercially viable products and services that generate or exploit the value of Earth observation imagery and datasets. In Italy, the Agency is looking to continue the activities of Commercialisation Ambassador, working across regions, technologies, and thematic areas.
