I'm glad to have the opportunity to explore the fascinating world of maritime industry operations during my visit to the Hambantota International Port 🇱🇰. During the visit, I have the opportunity to closely observe operations in HIPG and identify how they fit into the global maritime industry and supply chain. Container vessels are increasing their speeds to make up for longer journeys due to the Red Sea crisis. This also means a significant spike in CO2 emissions, with each vessel generating close to 55,000 tons of CO2 (roughly 14,000 tons more) when taking the longer route around Africa 🌱

Among the consequences of the Red Sea crisis and all major shipping lines' big vessels now rerouting through COGH, we can notice an increase in average speed as an attempt to partially offset the longer routes and increased transit time. #redsea #suezcanal #steaming #containershipping

In 2024, the average speed of large container vessels saw a notable uptick, reaching just over 16 knots compared to 15.19 knots in 2023, marking a roughly 5% increase in average sailing speeds. This increase is likely a consequence of the Red Sea crisis and the longer routes vessels are now taking to avoid the region. This example, shows the route from the Port of Singapore to Tanger Med Port, , this vessel maintained an average speed of 15.73 knots while traversing the Suez Canal, completing the voyage in approximately 18 days. However, when this same vessel opted to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope, it significantly increased its steaming pace, averaging 17.09 knots and reaching its destination in just 26 days. If the vessel were to maintain its previous average speed through the Suez Canal, the journey via the Cape of Good Hope would extend to 29 days. #redsea #tangermed #steaming #containershipping #supplychain #logistics #suezcanal
