In hiring many Veterans transitioning to the private sector, I’ve realized how invaluable the skills developed during service are in the civilian workplace. The military instills discipline, leadership, adaptability, and a strong work ethic—qualities that are critical to success in any industry. **Leadership** is about more than just directing a team; it's about motivating, mentoring, and ensuring that everyone is working toward a common goal. The ability to make decisions under pressure and remain calm in the face of adversity is something the military teaches you from day one. **Adaptability** is another key skill. The military prepares you to handle unexpected challenges with poise and resourcefulness. In the fast-paced world of business, being able to pivot quickly and effectively is crucial. **Teamwork** in the military is non-negotiable. You learn to trust your team, communicate effectively, and work together to achieve objectives. These are the same principles that drive success in the private sector. Great article in this month's Facilities Management Journal (FMJ) from our Alex Macrae IEng MSOE , a Royal Navy veteran who chairs our Armed Forces Kinship network, saying why the #facilitiesmanagement industry should recruit people with armed forces backgrounds. He says it is not just because it is a good thing to do, but that they are very resourceful and due to their work experiences 'have a can-do attitude, a strong work ethic and are problem-solvers. In short, they get things done'. 🔥Guaranteed to start a fire🔥 Reflecting on the past, I would have staunchly opposed endorsing a service member for a Skillbridge program that fell short of basic standards. My perspective has evolved significantly. 🔥 There's a fundamental issue here. I find it hard to believe that any reputable corporate entity would terminate an employee solely based on physical fitness or body fat percentage. What about the years of dedicated service these individuals have given to our country? Denying them opportunities to transition smoothly into civilian life not only impacts them but also their families financially and emotionally. 🔥 Moreover, does this practice affect a service member's willingness to recommend military service to friends and family? It's no wonder recruiting faces challenges and our national security is potentially compromised. This issue is a significant obstacle to post-service success and hampers individual thriving beyond the military. 🔥 No one is owed anything, and standards are standards, but this contributes to the veteran decline, and we can do better for those who have chosen to contribute to our nation. 🔥 I am curious about your thoughts on this subject. As always, we don't have to agree, but the dialogue is essential. We can do better; we have to do better.
