The grocery store and retail experience have evolved dramatically since the first self-service Piggly Wiggly in 1916, from baskets to shopping carts that revolutionized store layouts. Technological advancements, such as self-checkouts and online shopping, have transformed operations, with AI predicted to further enhance personalization and efficiency. Despite these changes, physical stores remain essential for their social and sensory experiences, a sentiment reinforced post-COVID-19. We recently completed a facade design of a Publix store. After the Great Depression, World War II, convenience stores, dollar stores, online and omnichannel sales, the Great Recession and the COVID pandemic, the grocery industry will post around $850 billion in sales this year, Statista estimated. And demand doesn’t seem to be going anywhere but up. Read on here: https://bit.ly/3VMEj9Y #ICSC #Marketplaces #Retail #RealEstate

Check out this Forbes contribution from my friend Nikki Baird!
I've been thinking about this for a few months, finally got a chance to jot the idea down. Is #retail expecting too much from stores? Or not enough? #Storeinnovation is hard - hard to come up with, hard to sustain over time. But it's a hill retail needs to climb, especially as younger generations increasingly value the store for experience, inspiration, and discovery. https://lnkd.in/gCc82AgP

The term ⭐"brick-and-mortar"⭐ refers to traditional physical businesses or retail stores operating in buildings or other kinds of physical locations, as opposed to an online or virtual store. That is the terminology used loosely to establish companies that have a physical existence from those that are only online. This implies that brick-and-mortar stores allow customers to get to a physical location, view products, interact with staff, and finally go to the checkout. Examples include department stores, supermarkets, and small local shops. #BrickAndMortar #Retail #Ecommerce #Business #CustomerExperience #RetailIndustry #Shopping #TraditionalStores #Community #CustomerService #RetailTrends

Agreed. The best in-store technologies to move customer experience should be nearly invisible.

It looks like the future of retail might just be pint-sized Consumers are increasingly favoring localized shopping experiences—a trend that picked up steam during the pandemic. According to new data from Placer.ai, small-format retail locations are attracting more frequent visits, and big retailers are taking note. Take Sprouts Farmers Market, for example. Over the past 2.5 years, they've been downsizing, focusing on smaller, more accessible properties. Their small-format stores have increased by nearly 50% since January 2022, helping them outpace the overall grocery sector this year. And they're not alone. Trader Joe's and Whole Foods are also going smaller for the sake of convenience. Macy's has jumped on the bandwagon too, with their new Bloomie's concept. These highly curated, small-format stores are tailored to local tastes, with three locations already up and running. Even BJ's Wholesale Club is testing the waters with BJ's Market in Warwick, Rhode Island. This half-sized store has seen impressive year-over-year customer visit growth and shorter average visit times—21 minutes compared to the nearly 31 minutes at their full-sized stores. These shifts suggest that consumers are craving quick, efficient, and highly localized shopping experiences. As the saying goes, good things come in small packages! What are your thoughts on the small-format trend? Attention Kmart Shoppers! 🚨 Kmart is set to close stores on of it’s last stores in Bridgehampton, NY. I remember when it opened 25 years ago and it’s a reminder of how quickly the retail landscape is changing. 📉 So what does this mean for big-box retail? 🏢 Shift Toward E-commerce: Consumers are turning to online shopping, and even retail giants are following suit with enhanced delivery options. 🏬 Smaller Store Formats: Expect to see fewer massive stores and more specialized, streamlined spaces designed for both in-person and online shoppers. 🔄 Reinventing Retail Spaces: Big-box stores are evolving into community hubs or even fulfillment centers for e-commerce! For real estate investors, this opens opportunities to rethink and repurpose commercial spaces! 🏗️ #Retail #CommercialRealEstate
