As part of the National Collaboration Programme, we have published 2⃣ new use cases on how #CopernicusMarine supports safety at sea🌊: 1⃣ Search & Rescue operations in Spanish waters: Our service provides data to SASEMAR (Spanish Maritime Safety and Rescue Agency) in order to monitor and better predict ocean and coastal currents, an essential variable for rescue operations🚨 2⃣ Environmental management in the Belgian North Sea region: Our service provides a modelling/assessment tool (OSERIT) which tracks hazardous incidents such as oil spills and other human-related matters. We were delighted to join forces with PROTECT BALTIC for the Baltic Stakeholder Conference 2024 in Helsinki in February. The conference report is now available, marking a crucial moment in collaborative efforts towards safeguarding #biodiversity in the Baltic Sea. Over 230 participants, including policymakers, industry leaders, environmental advocates, and researchers convened to discuss how we can collectively work to improve #marine #protectedareas in the Baltic, addressing themes such as management effectiveness and guidelines, spatial #modelling, #ecosystemservices and valuation, legal frameworks for planning marine spaces, the new MPA Portal, #restoration action plans, #governance, monitoring, and ecological coherence. MPA Europe's Regional Stakeholder Workshop for the Baltic was part of this great event, and we thank the PROTECT BALTIC team for kindly allowing us to share their platform. We identified opportunities to strengthen the outcomes from both projects through ongoing #collaboration and we discussed with #stakeholders how our results can strengthen existing MPAs, extend the network of MPAs and support science-based marine spatial planning (#msp). Please find the PROTECT BALTIC conference report in the link below and watch this space, as MPA Europe will share our own Baltic stakeholder workshop report in the coming weeks! #30by30 #sdg14 #sdg15 #sdg17

Fate and behavior of oil in the marine and coastal environment: · Sources of oil spills. · Oil properties and behavior. · Oil weathering. · Effect of oil weathering on response. · Shoreline interaction. 2. Impacts of oil spills: · General impacts of oil spills. · Impacts on social and economic activity. · Impacts on marine environment. · Impacts on coastal environment. 3. International legislation: · International legislation concerning oil spills. · National obligations regarding oil spill preparedness response and co-operation. · Capacity building and technical co-operation. · Regional agreements on oil spill preparedness, response and co-operation. 4. Oil spill preparedness: · Establishing legislative basis. · Contingency planning. · Training and exercising. 5. Overview of oil spill response: · Spill management and co-ordination. · Roles and responsibilities. · Oil spill response operation. · Oil spill response challenge. · Post incident operations. #International_Maritime_Organization

To #Coastal communities and professionals, go check this out 👀 🤓 Workshop to present 15 pilot 'use cases' designed to support the implementation of EU Directives at the national level. How these projects used the Copernicus Marine Service (free and open data) to answer their questions. Approaches to: * Downscale monitoring activities: Tailoring data from the open ocean to specific coastal regions; and or * Enhance user-focused services: Developing practical applications for marine policy and governance stakeholders.
📢Save the date for the EU Coastal Use Cases Workshop It will showcase the 1⃣5⃣ projects developed under the #CopernicusMarine National Collaboration Programme These projects aim to: 🔹Provide tailored coastal monitoring data 🔹Support the implementation of 🇪🇺 Directives at the national level Learn how these projects are advancing marine policy through our data! 📅16 September Register at👇 https://lnkd.in/eNSFzY8a

Best Rapid Environmental Assessment Decision sYstem-(BE-READY) was an EU-funded project between 2020 to 2022, under the call of prevention and preparedness projects for civil protection and marine pollution. BE-READY was designed to enhance the mitigation of marine pollution in the EU Mediterranean Sea and neighboring countries. The marine environment is continuously and increasingly threatened by pollution derived from maritime accidents that frequently cause spills of dangerous substances. Sufficient work has been devoted to endowing the EU-Member States with common protocols, action plans, and operational tools regarding oil or HNS spills. There has not been a unified platform that covers the Oil and HNS spills, and that was the gap that the BE-READY project aimed to bridge by implementing an Environmental Decision Support System (EDSS), that is easily exportable to different geographical contexts, which models the most common sources of pollution. In a quest to advance the concept of BE-READY gave birth to the PROMPT project which is geared towards expounding the features of the EDSS developed under BE-READY, establishing containers detecting system through satellite images, advancing the skills of the end-users, and enhancing the engagement of relevant stakeholders for exploitation of the project’s results and outcomes. PROMPT seeks to realize this goal by modeling the harbour and coastal circulation in the proximity of the Genoa harbour, one of the biggest ports of the Mediterranean Sea, which lay close to highly sensitive environmental areas; (2) model the dispersion of volatile substances related to oil and hazardous-noxious-substances spills in the harbour of Tripoli and Aqaba; (3) develop an algorithm for automatically detect oil spills from satellite images to provide to the decision support system localisation of the area interested by the spills; (4) develop an innovative algorithm able to track lost container in the sea; (5) and to train and transfer the knowledge that resides in the development of decision support system tool to the local operators of partners belonging to the European Neighbourhood Policy countries (Lebanon and Jordan). In conclusion, BE-READY and PROMPT projects are quite interrelated and both are funded by the European Union under the Union Civil Protection Mechanism Program. PROMPT which is an extension of BE-READY is designed to advance the features of the EDSS developed under BE-READY, establishing containers detecting system through satellite, advancing the skills of the end-users, and enhancing engagement of relevant stakeholders for exploitation of the project’s results and outcomes. Both projects are geared toward fighting marine pollution caused by spills of oil or HNS onto the waters of the EU Mediterranean Sea and neighboring countries through maritime transportation activities. The end goal of both projects is to safeguard and preserve the biodiversity of the intervention areas.

Founder & Chairman, Robertsbridge. Deputy Chairman, Stonehaven. Board member at The Metals Company (TMC).
The idea that sea floor nodule harvesting is some rushed endeavour that lacks scientific rigour or transparency is a huge fallacy. Here is the reality of the process being undertaken, already spanning over a decade. You will find few industries or firms amassing this level of data and subjecting it to detailed scrutiny by stakeholders and regulators. By all means challenge and enhance the data and help improve our collective knowledge. But stop pretending this work isn’t being done.
The Environmental Impact Statement for our NORI-D Project represents the culmination of over a decade of pioneering deep-sea research in collaboration with leading marine institutions and expert industry contractors. In this short video, learn more about the studies that underpin our EIS, how the process differs to projects on land, and how this wealth of data is being shared openly with the regulator and stakeholders.
