This International Women’s Day has me reflecting a lot about a recent post I saw by a young mother heading off on her second maternity leave - voicing all the career angst that comes with that. In it she wondered about taking that much time away from her career and how to balance being a mom who values her time with family, and also has career ambitions. How to balance both sides of you - and find fulfillment. It made me think back to my early career when maternity leave was only a few short months. How I chose not to re-enter the workforce right away. How I chose to structure our agency as a young mom prioritizing work from home and flexible work hours in the early 2000’s. When I watch women struggle with all the same conflicted emotions I’m reminded: -First, how jarring it was to go from full throttle career mode to newborn baby care mode. I was not prepared! -Stepping away will not harm your career – in fact it allows you to bring new perspectives and wisdom to your work life. -It is always a juggling act to balance career/family Having a partner who supports you and finds a way to help balance it all with you is key- aka YOUR family plan. Finally, I guess I want to say to young woman – it is all possible and our family/career paths are a journey - always in development. Also - you can be a Grandma too and be balancing work/family. There’s many of us who have gone on your journey – we’re here for you! March was a beautiful month filled with so many gathering of women from all walks of life. I consciously took time to meet more women beyond my circle, which enriched my heart & soul as I listened openly to their experiences, struggles, honesty and open sharing. We will always meet different kinds of people in this journey of life, good and not so good ones. Some may differ in views bec of their experiences, and we learn understand more and empathize. Some bring lessons to your life. While most of them are blessings and magic fairy dusts from the universe. And as I grow older, I have come to realize that we can only keep moving forward. I don’t know what’s to come, but what I know is that I’m making the right decisions for this point of my life. To new journeys, new experiences and the quest for a life well lived. Don’t ever stop believing in good things and the universe. Keep on going out there to meet people and hear their stories. Keep on expressing your thoughts without fear of being judged. Be fearless. Take time to pause for self-care. Prioritize things that can bring you longevity and peace of mind. #womeninbusiness
