Happy Aotearoa Spanish Language Week! It is a perfect time to wow your friends and colleagues with some Spanish phrases! Buenos días — Good morning Buenas tardes — Good afternoon Buenas noches — Good evening / Good night To keep the conversation going, it’s time to ask “how are you”. Here are some basic Spanish questions that come after greeting: ¿Cómo está usted? — How are you? (formal) ¿Cómo estás? — How are you? (informal) ¿Qué tal? — How are you? (informal) / What’s up? ¿Cómo te va? — How’s it going? ¿Qué haces? — What are you doing? ¿Qué pasa? — What’s happening? If someone asks you one of these questions, you can use the following conversational Spanish phrases: Bien, gracias — Good, thank you Muy bien — Very well Así, así — So, so Como siempre — As always And also don’t forget about this fundamental follow-up question: ¿Y tú? — And you? If you feel like it’s time to switch to English, you’re free to clarify whether the person you’re talking to speaks English or not. Just say “¿Habla inglés?” that is used for “Do you speak English?”. Learning languages changes your life. For better! See Mike’s journey below.
🥖 🍷 🗼Learning French changed my life. It’s as simple as that. ⛺ From the first visit to Meung sur Loire as part of a school trip aged 13, I fell in love with the country. With the weather (I come from the north of the UK!), the food (I come from the north of the UK!), the wine. Wine? But you were 13, I hear you cry. It was the 1970s – what can I say! 🎼 Speaking and understanding the language gave me access to a whole new world of books, films, music, culture. I recently read how daniela (dani) herrera learned English from the Backstreet Boys. I loved my classics – Piaf, Brel, Aznavour. I was old before my time! 🤣 👨👩👧👦 But it’s the human relationships that cement that love. The buzz you get from making someone laugh in a foreign language. The deeper understanding of who someone is and where they are coming from. The joy of being able to say something in the foreign language – for which there are no words in your own. 👩🏫 And let’s not forget the teachers. My secondary school teachers played a huge role in instilling that love for the language. Their enthusiasm, their patience, their humour. Mr Walton (mentioned in the newspaper article). Mr Brennan, Mrs Freeman. Life changers, each one of them. 👨🏫 So if you’re a language teacher, know that your students’ love of the language will start with your own. They will know if you are just going through the motions. It’s that relationship with them that will make the difference. ❔ I know there are lots of bilinguals in my network. How did speaking another language change your life? #PearsonLanguages #PearsonGlobalScaleOfFrench

Seek to Speak is now 4 years old and (since 2020) and we have a lot of feedback from our previous participants who joined in the past: - "The topics we were discussing were both helpful in improving the language conversation and educating with new information" - "Beneficial and very good chance to improve our speaking skills especially for people who have no one to speak English with" - "Giving the opening to special people to join some calls in order to let them share their knowledge with the other participants was indeed a successful idea" - "It was very well-organized. Everything was so great for me. I've improved my speaking skills a lot! And it helped me to regain the things I know about English. Simply because it allowed me to practice English over and over again throughout the past two months." We don't simply practice the language, we expand our horizons by learning various perspectives of the topics we deal with. It's a mutual cultural enrichment! Your opportunity to learn English deserves to be chased! What are you waiting for?

Do you understand English? I recall an experience I had in my first few months in the United States when I stopped a gentleman in the airport to ask a question, surprisingly, he cut me off mid sentence to ask “Do understand English?”. I was immediately indignant! Of course I understood English, I have only been speaking it my whole life! However, I gathered every iota self control I could muster and looked him dead in the eyes with a big bright smile on my face and answered “No, I do not understand English, I only speak Latin and Greek, thanks for your help though and have a nice day”. As I walked away gracefully, I could feel him staring daggers at me. I am quite sure this experience is not unique to me and would resonate with other international students navigating life in a foreign country. Daily I see a sourge of people faking an accent that isn’t theirs, struggling at it and most times failing miserably. It is even more frustrating when you meet a fellow country person and you both get chatty and they are trying to fake an accent you can clearly see through. Dearest International students, what you owe any one is clarity of speech and not an idealistic accent of how an intelligent person should sound. Be as authentic as possible. Always strive to improve yourself and not struggling to become someone else. Who would be YOU if you become someone else? Communication especially public speaking is a skill which can be learnt and improved on just like any other skill. If you notice you speak too fast, mentally force yourself to slow down, look people in the eyes and smile while you talk. Have you ever had a similar experience? What do you think of my Nigerian accent? #selfdevelopment #accents #internationalstudents #graduateschool #phdjourney

When I moved abroad 5 years ago, I didn't speak the language. Not knowing the language made the most simple things a scary endeavor. Even putting gas in the car was stressful. Forget about going to the doctor and the bank. I told myself so many stories. I had trauma around speaking Spanish and my ego was definitely leading the charge. I would rather not communicate than get it all wrong. It was holding me back in the most profound ways. It took some work, but I decided to stop letting my fear get the best of me. Here's what I did: 1. I returned to classes 2. I gave myself the freedom to make LOTS of mistakes 3. I let go of my need to be perfect...mostly 4. I laugh at my mistakes rather than berate myself (also, they are hella funny) 5. I found a teacher that was in alignment with my needs, as a student 6. I unabashedly ask for help 7. I welcome and thank people for correcting me because it helps me learn Don't get me wrong. I still struggle to express myself, but I finally consider myself a fluent speaker, even if I sound like a 10 year old. This is about more than Spanish, though. How many things have you let fear keep you from accomplishing? What if you were able to release some of the fear and step into expansion, instead?

English holidays in Scotland in which you walk lightly through nature, let your soul roam free in our hills and shape our community with your words. Choose REAL conversations (not practise ones).
Eek. I'm starting to see posts sharing bullet-point lists and reflections on how well the year went. If I tell you that I posted my sister's parcel to Australia today, you might guess I'm not ready to do this. (I'll do a bit of business navel-gazing in January) Starting a YouTube channel was one of the things on my list for 2023. Only I'm not great at following things up. I moved on to the next project and I've been stuck on 34 subscribers for months. (Is that a 'win'?) The channel's concept is that I make videos to help build your listening comprehension through mini-immersive English Moments. Culture-led immersive English experiences are my speciality, but it's new for me to be producing English learning 'content' with video. If they also happen to show what a great place Scotland is to visit and give me a further excuse to travel around... well... coincidence 🤔. My YouTube videos aren't English lessons, rather they are learning/practice resources that can be used autonomously, or as part of a class. They usually combine a narrated audio description with scenes exploring some part of Scottish culture. (Sometimes I put practice questions/listening instructions in the video comments). If you or your students are curious about UK Christmas traditions, we've shared one to help with English learning. Is there something you began this year, and failed to follow through on? Cheer me up in the comments! #ChristmasEnglishLesson #EnglishListeningPractice #EnglishComprehension #ResourceSharing https://lnkd.in/eghkw7Rg
