WHEN DIVERSITY GETS DIVISIVE, WE FOCUS ON THE IMPACT This field of workplace ‘equality, diversity and inclusion’ is on a journey. It’s an area of people management that continues to evolve. It's gone from being on the periphery to finding a place at the leadership table. And recently the journey has become more of a rollercoaster ride. The rapid ascent powered by the Black Live Matters movement and other wider cultural forces, has been followed by a palpable backlash. → The US Supreme Court has ruled that race can no longer be considered as a factor in university admissions, ending a decades-old policies of ‘affirmative action’ designed to promote diversity. → In the UK the Government is reviewing civil service investment in EDI. → ‘Anti-woke’ rhetoric continues dominates the right-wing press. So where does that leave us as EDI leaders? Here’s the thing. Conversations about diversity are going to face friction because this is about change, and change is messy. The important thing is that, as a field, we keep evolving. That we flex to fit and, find out what works best and how, and continue to find ways to deliver value for businesses and for people. We don’t much care for labels. But whether it’s D&I, EDI or DEI – it’s not going to DIE. What matters is that we are making a positive difference every day. And we have the proof of that. So, we won’t be riled. We’re here for the ride. We’re ready to listen, learn, evolve and innovate. And continue to make a difference. What’s your take on the future of EDI? ----- Half the Sky is an elite network of specialists. Brought in by some of the largest organisations in the world, we help shape powerful internal cultures that result in positive outcomes for everyone. #EDI #culturechange #inclusiveculture #diversityandinclusion #PeopleManagement

In the hustle and bustle of life, it's all too easy to fall into the trap of quick judgment when faced with differences in opinion or behavior. However, it's crucial to remind ourselves of the importance of embracing diversity of thought and perspective. Consider for a moment your own journey of growth and learning. There was a time when the knowledge you possess today was unfamiliar to you. It took time, experience, and perhaps even some mistakes along the way to arrive at your current understanding. Similarly, each person we encounter is on their own unique path of discovery. They bring with them a wealth of experiences, beliefs, and perspectives that may differ from our own. Instead of hastily condemning them for not conforming to our expectations, let's approach these differences with curiosity and empathy. By opening ourselves up to understanding and appreciating diverse viewpoints, we not only enrich our own lives but also contribute to a more inclusive and harmonious society. Let's remember that it's okay to disagree, but it's how we engage with those differences that truly matters. So, the next time you find yourself tempted to pass judgment, pause and reflect on the journey that brought you here. Let's choose understanding over condemnation and celebrate the richness of diversity in all its forms.

When we have a ‘better-than’ bias, we assume that what we have achieved is solely because of our effort—that our circumstances didn’t play a part in any meaningful way. Alternatively, when we have a worse-than bias, we assume that our circumstances are wholly to blame for our failures and that we are incapable of influencing the outcome in any way. However, to really understand a person, connect with a person, and be more helpful, we have to consider their experience. Consider the factors in your own experience—and in the experiences of others—that contribute to both achievement and challenge. Indeed’s Black Inclusion Group (BIG), a community for members of the African Diaspora and their Allies, recently hosted a virtual event, “My Path to VP”. This event connected senior leaders in an enlightening interview, giving Indeed employees a glimpse into their career trajectories. During this discussion, Misty Gaither, VP, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB ), conducted a captivating interview with Marquis Parker, VP, Global Product Commercialization. Marquis shared insights from his work experiences, detailed his career journey, discussed the challenges he’s faced and conquered, and imparted valuable lessons learned along the way. Throughout this session, Marquis generously shared valuable knowledge and career advice for anyone at any stage of their professional journey, including the following: "My mom taught me when I was a kid that you can have whatever you want as long as you're willing to work for it. And so, yes, one of the reasons that I don't take no for an answer is because I'm willing to work for whatever I want." “I would advise people to think about the path that you're going to get to, not where you want to get to. Once you have that locked in, you figure out how to get there; you talk to people about your plan and see if they will jump in and be your lead blocker and help you score that touchdown. You have to be intentional because it becomes very hard to get there if you're not." #InsideIndeed #WeHelpPeopleGetJobs #CareerAdvice #SeniorLeaders

In a world that thrives on diversity, it is crucial to accept the thoughts and perspectives of others. Instead of regressing and closing ourselves off to different ideas, we should embrace them. By doing so, we open ourselves up to new possibilities, insights, and understanding. Accepting the thoughts of others does not mean we have to agree with them, but rather, it means acknowledging and respecting their right to hold those thoughts. It allows us to engage in meaningful conversations and learn from one another. When we accept diverse thoughts, we foster an environment of inclusivity and growth, where ideas can be challenged, refined, and expanded upon. This approach not only benefits us as individuals but also contributes to the progress and development of society as a whole.
