🌍 Embracing Collaborative #Climate #Change #Education for a Sustainable Future 🌿 In the face of mounting climate change challenges, we find ourselves at a crossroads. The choices are clear: taking radical action on carbon emissions or investing in education. Grateful for the dedicated efforts of my superb colleagues Chantal Snyman and Henre Benson in addressing this critical issue. 📚 Climate Change Education (CCE) is an essential tool for building awareness, fostering sustainable behavior, and empowering individuals and communities to address climate change. Our partners, VVOB South Africa and Fundisa for Change, have led the charge in integrating CCE into South African schools. 🏫 Through the Keep it Cool project, they integrated climate change education into 100 secondary schools and engaged local communities in change projects. It's about more than just education; it's about creating a resilient society. 🌱 CCE has led to innovative changes, such as outdoor classrooms, nurturing creativity and problem-solving skills in learners—essential attributes for mitigating and adapting to climate change. 🤝 Collaboration at multiple levels, including government, educators, and local communities, is vital for the success of CCE. A national symposium brought together various stakeholders to ensure that all parts contribute to a larger, critical process. 🚀 Looking ahead, we aim to strengthen the national curriculum, involve youth in climate action, and provide blended professional development opportunities for teachers. The goal is to create a coordinated and highly effective program for sustainable impact. 📈 Evidence shows that the Keep it Cool project has had a multi-level impact, from schools to communities to districts and even at the national level. It's a testament to the power of education to drive positive change. 🌿 Let's continue to collaborate and work towards a sustainable future through climate change education. Education specialists explored the critical role of early climate education for learners at the 1th Asia Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development as UNESCO has reaffirmed its leadership in catalyzing cooperation for climate education. Hence, that message underscored the side event, ‘Building a Greener Future: Education as a Climate Solution’, at the 11th Asia-Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development, which was held at the United Nations Conference Centre on 21 February 2024, in Bangkok.   The event was co-organized by the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok (UNESCO Bangkok), the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), Save the Children, Plan International, World Vision International, the United Nations Children's Fund, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Secretariat. A UNESCO analysis of 100 national curriculum frameworks in 2021 revealed that nearly half (47%) do not mention climate disruption. Only 23% of teachers felt able to properly address climate action in their classrooms and 70% of young people surveyed could not explain climate disruption, and expressed concerns about the way in which it is currently taught. Following this analysis, Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, made environmental education a priority in terms of the support which the Organization provides to its Member States.
