Sustainability is no longer about doing less harm but about doing more good! The Coca-Cola Company is piloting a new UK-based packaging initiative, temporarily going label-less for its Sprite brand in order to boost recycling efforts. The company is replacing traditional labels on its Sprite and Sprite Zero 500ml rPET bottles with an embossed logo on the front of the pack and product information laser-engraved on the back. Consumer goods companies are prioritising and evolving their sustainability goals and as per a report by Gartner, in the next 3 years, 20% of organisations will divert their focus on reducing their packaging’s carbon footprints. These efforts include not only using less packaging materials but also using materials that are efficiently produced, transported and processed. Consumer goods companies are intensifying efforts to enhance sustainability, especially focusing on eco-friendly packaging solutions. Gartner predicts that within the next three years, 20% of organisations will prioritise reducing their packaging’s carbon footprint. This initiative involves utilising fewer materials and optimising production, transportation, and processing of packaging. Several consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies are actively exploring sustainable alternatives for their popular products. Notable examples include Pernod Ricard’s Absolut Vodka introducing single-mould paper-based bottles, Puracy’s Clean Can System eliminating single-use plastics, Nestlé piloting paper-wrapped KitKat chocolate bars, The Kraft Heinz Company testing paper-based ketchup bottles, and Kellogg Company partnering with Albertsons for in-store recycling initiatives. Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) products are a part of our daily lives, but their packaging often ends up as waste. With 66% of consumers prioritizing sustainability, the demand for sustainable packaging is growing. In markets like India, where the FMCG sector is set to reach $616 billion by 2027, sustainable practices are extremely important. This has fostered brand innovation in biodegradable materials, recyclable materials, and reducing single-use plastics - while complying with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines. Consumers and companies share this responsibility together.
