In a consultancy meeting with a client few days ago, we had a talk about a problematic staff with poor performance and attitude. We brought together with us a fresh graduate as our trainee as part of her grooming process. After the meeting, I was told by my colleague that she had mixed feelings after attending the consultancy meeting. Terrified, uneasy, awed, sympathy, all mixed up. I guess it was normal for freshies and non- HR to have such feelings after listening to HR people talking in HR language. I used to be so too when I first started HR career. But I think she is more fortunate than I was because she went through the grooming process. She is made to prepare for such circumstances and scenario in reality. Maybe it's a good idea for HR practitioners to go through such process before actually practising HR. I wasn't sure whether the university interns who did their internship with IR Department in the company I worked before had the same feelings since they were actually exposed with the real actions including DI, dismissals and handling trade unions, but I think now I have the general idea on how to design an internship and practical training programmes for trainees in HR and IR. I now think that it's a must. Manage humans humanely 🙏🏽

This internship program has been developed in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #92, which calls for increased employment opportunities for Indigenous peoples. The program has been developed by Crown Investments Corporation and Saskatchewan’s Crown corporations to provide a mechanism to bridge Indigenous graduates from eligible post-secondary institutes into permanent employment opportunities with the Crown sector, provincial government or the private sector in Saskatchewan. We’re looking for two Interns – one in Human Resources and one in our Finance division. We hope you consider applying if you: • Are ready to bring your knowledge to SGI. • Pay attention to the details. • Can set priorities for various tasks. • Can work independently and as part of a team. • Want to use your leadership skills for good – like actively supporting SGI’s culture, expanding your own learning, and supporting your colleagues as they do the same.
