Witness this captivating footage captured in December 2020, showcasing the awe-inspiring Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in NYC.
In a mesmerizing display, the bridge's vacant upper level sways gracefully to the rhythm of powerful winds, emitting a resounding groan that reverberates through the air.
The bridge's remarkable response to the elements is a testament to the intricate harmony between engineering and nature: this is proof that the elements of nature can only be 'domesticated' if structures are made resilient and compatible with them.
With wind speeds reaching a staggering 60 mph, the bridge enters a state of resonant oscillation, a carefully predicted and managed scenario overseen by structural engineers.
The bridge's structural integrity remains steadfast, standing resilient against the formidable gusts.
The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, an iconic suspension marvel, serves as a vital link connecting the vibrant New York City boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn. Born in 1964, this double-deck masterpiece proudly carries the weight of 13 lanes of bustling Interstate 278: a robust seven lanes on the upper level and a seamless six lanes on the lower level.
Spanning an impressive total length of 13,700 feet (4,176 meters) and adorned with a width of 103 feet (31 meters), the bridge's soaring height of 693 feet (211 meters) is crowned by its most majestic feature – the awe-inducing longest span stretching a staggering 4,260 feet (1,298 meters).
What do you think of this harmonious collaboration between human innovation and the forces of nature?

Our new report CORRIDORS - DESIGNING LINEAR INFRASTRUCTURE IN A NON-LINEAR WORLD is out!
The study takes a cross-sector look at the impact of built corridors on people and planet, as well as the impact of built environments on natural corridors. By focusing on evolving infrastructure from single-use to multi-benefit, 'Corridors' aims to inform, inspire, and empower a worldwide transition to a more diverse, integrated, and outcome-oriented method of shaping linear space.
Importantly, the report offers a practical method for breaking down silos and enabling more holistic approaches, through the creation of a common taxonomy and associated workshop toolkit.

With input from more than 50 stakeholders and a literature review covering material from five different sectors in four world regions, it's been a long and winding road to get to this point.
Thank you to one and all 🙏
Read the testimonials from Emma Cutting (Heart Gardening Project), David Milner (Create Streets), Martin Knight (Knight Architects), Gareth Collins (Transport for NSW), and Christopher Martin (Urban Movement) on our website.

Our Corridors - Designing Linear Infrastructure in a Non-Linear World is out today. Thanks to our Research Lead in London, Camilla Siggaard Andersen for creating this important document. Critically it has been based on insights and workshops in the four global regions that we operate within, with input from over 70 stakeholders and agencies, providing a balanced, both aspirational and pragmatic snapshot of how we approach the design of linear infrastructure in a way that is nature positive and community driven.

Corridors like the Rustavi-Tbilisi-Mtskheta Corridor share rail, river, and road links. Though fragmented, this corridor, and others in #Georgia, harbor great potential for improved urban mobility and economic, social, and ecological development. Hassell's new guide, "Designing Linear Infrastructure in a Non-Linear World" stresses the importance and rewards of investing in natural corridors (rivers and greenways) together with transport and energy improvements. Hassel's approach to corridors unites the disciplines of transport, urban design, and landscape architecture. 🚇 🛣 🌳 ⚡ 🌆 🚲 🚉
"For humans and nature alike, corridors are both the conduits for creating more resilient communities, increasing the prosperity of populations, and accelerating innovation – and the barriers leading to system fragility, stagnation, and decline. The design, construction, and management of linear infrastructure is, therefore, a field of utmost importance." Download the guide via the link in the post below.
