It's been over a decade since I started working at Big 3 Media and I think around 7 years since I last cut a director's reel. There was either no time, or no patience, or maybe even some doubt. Leaving Singapore, heading to India, and eventually starting up Big 3 in Mumbai was a massive challenge and to be honest, I had no clue what I was doing. There were many hiccups along the way and many didn't think we would make it. But Willie Lee backed me and the team through the bad times and good, giving me an occasional (and much needed) talking to, but never once losing faith. 5 years in, my team at Big 3 India is still small and sprightly, but they are also strong, creative, driven, and most importantly, bold. That boldness is key. It has pushed us to try new things, be more creative, stand our ground, and empathise better with our clients and peers. This year, while still banging out commercials and brand films, we have also started creating our own content library, writing, directing, and shooting extremely varied content aimed at streaming audiences worldwide. The challenge of working on a thriller and a comedy at the same time with different teams is quite exhilerating. Over half a decade, Big 3 India has worked with some of the best brands and agencies around the world, made incredible partnerships, and most importantly, learned how to walk the tightrope that connects creative scripts, strong filmmaking, and clients/audiences that feel understood. Brand and product placements in Bollywood movies have been go-to options for enhancing brand recognition of the Indian audience since long. While watching SRK's Jawan recently, I noticed several popular brands appearing in different scenes. However, the one that stood out was Asian Paints. Its logo appeared not once but multiple times during fast-paced, action packed sequences, when the viewers were glued to the screen, not wanting to miss a moment. This ensured that it was exposed effectively to people. According to Dr. Cristel Russell's three dimensional framework for product placement in movies (1998), placement can be done in mainly three varied ways as per the objective to be achieved by the brand. First is Screen Placement, which refers to the visual presence of the brand as a mere element of any scene. The second way is Script Placement, where the brand or product is mentioned in some way during a scene, by some character. The final but most impactful way of placing is Plot Placement, where the brand or its product becomes an integral part of the main story. In the iconic movies shown below, these dimensions were used as per the need or requirement of the brand and filmmaker involved: 1) Jawan (Asian Paints): Screen 2) Hasee Toh Phasee (Kurkure): Screen 3) Phir Hera Pheri (Domino's): Screen Script (Done on purpose to show always 30 minutes on-time delivery policy) 4) Mere Dad Ki Maruti (Maruti Suzuki): Screen Script Plot 5) Koi Mil Gaya (Bournvita): Screen Script 6) Chak De India (McDonald's): Screen Script Plot While a common metric to measure the effectiveness of brand placements is to monitor the incremental growth in sales, it is more often than not used by big brands to remain relevant in the minds of consumers in an increasingly competitive world. #branding #advertising #consumerbehaviour #psychology #brandvoice #brandhealth #films #cinema #movies #marketing #perspective #brandmanagement #communication

This resulted in embarrassment, an irate client and financial loss as well. The client was so furious that he wanted me sacked. My boss stood his ground. "He made a mistake. We have paid for it. People who know me from college, work, or family understand how passionate I am about movies. Have you ever failed at the thing you wanted your entire life? This is one thing I have failed at multiple times. The only roles I ever applied for out of college were in the entertainment industry. I tried pursuing a postgraduate degree in filmmaking, even bunking a month at IIT to attend the National School of Drama. But coming from a lower-middle-class family, I never had the luxury to choose filmmaking over my education. The entertainment industry and movie-making were always in the back of my mind. Eventually, I convinced the EVP of Hotstar to take my interview for VP-Content strategy position. I cleared all three rounds with flying colors, despite having only six years of post-MBA experience compared to the 8-12 years required for the role. However, I flunked the final interview. Of all the rounds, I was rejected in the HR round, where they mentioned I wouldn't be a good fit for the entertainment industry. This rejection was a hard pill to swallow, especially after coming so close to my dream. It felt like all my efforts and passion had been for nothing. But despite this setback, my love for movies remains undiminished. I learned that failure is not the end of the road, but a sign that something different, perhaps even better, awaits. After all, every great story has its twists and turns, and perhaps my journey in the entertainment industry is just getting started. #passion #journey #success #startup
