Small villages in Europe are a model for sustainable, low carbon living. Crowded urban city living is not always the answer. In this episode, we discuss the low carbon lifestyle of an island village in Croatia along with the Canadian equivalent, the Gulf islands of British Columbia. #sustainableliving https://lnkd.in/geq9AQmW

In the discourse surrounding climate change, it is important that we lend a receptive ear to voices that have historically been underrepresented. These voices often belong to individuals and organizations disproportionately susceptible to the far-reaching consequences of climate change, which extend well beyond immediate financial gains and the cyclical nature of politics. 👂 🔊 This imperative was at the forefront during the recent panel discussion, "In Conversation: Intersectionality and the Climate Crisis," held as a part of the Auckland Climate Festival which I had the pleasure of attending. Panellists delved into the significance of indigenous wisdom in sustainability, emphasizing the critical need to incorporate the voices of marginalized communities into our collective journey towards a more inclusive and sustainable world. 🌏 Having had a vantage point to witness the meticulous planning that underpinned this event, I wish to extend my sincere appreciation to the exceptional team at The Sustainable Future Collective for their efforts in organising this panel, and in particular to Tegan Martin and Veronique Simmonds for their invaluable support. 🌿 A resounding homai te pakipaki to my dear friends Tracey Wong, Faiesea Ah Chee, Katja Phutaraksa Neef, and the entire exceptional panel (Hinauri Apa-Fepulea'i, Kieran Panui and Dylan Asafo) for their mahi and unwavering dedication to their respective domains within the climate sphere. Their contributions to the discussion were nothing short of enlightening, expanding my horizons and enriching my perspectives in the process. 👏 . . . . #sustainability #environment #nature #auckland #climatefestival #future #voices #climate #climatechange #youth #rangatahi #inclusitivity #newzealand #education

We had a dialogue with experts at UAM Cuajimalpa with UNESCO Chair to talk about how we can build a resilient future. Our life deeply depends on biodiversity and ecosystem health. During these unprecedented times, humans are not doing enough to solve or mitigate the harm from the climate crisis. We need to rethink growth, prosperity and development for our communities to flourish. Cities are key if we want to build a resilient future, although nowadays more than 50% of worlds population lives in urban spots, we are not separate from nature, we’ll always be part of it and we depend on it.

What can we (humans) do to be more sustainable? Would you be willing to fly less than once a year? - This week I was at NEMO, there was a forum where they asked this kind of questions about climate. If not (sadly in my case), why not? Can we reduce the amount of travellling? Can we find good alternatives? One reason for travelling is to allow our head to wonder, get inspired and recharged. One day at the science museum gave me a similar effect but I did not know before to try. How many of these things are we missing on? Maybe we just need to experiment a bit more with we have at home? -> What do you think? Which activity feels more like travelling for you? Let me know in the comments below. #climateaction #science #creativity #change #sustainability

It is hard to visit Iceland without thinking about our changing climate. Our small group was privileged to see a fairly common, if extraordinary and not often seen, example during our glacier lagoon tour. This video missed the first dramatic “falling off” of half the iceberg (itself a sign of warming as the icebergs are chunks of the melting glacier) and doesn’t capture the elegance and breathtaking event. Partly that is my amateur photography and partly it’s because the guide was half videoing this amazing event himself and half moving the boat to keep us from a Titanic scene. Sometimes these glacial icebergs as they melt also emerge unexpectedly - and you can listen to us wondering how much the tipping would continue and commenting on some parts of the ice rising - although that is harder to see. None of this changed my belief that an unrealistic approach of commanding us to adhere to a specific energy economy (electric) will fail. America has always led the world through amazing innovation - not by out-regulating other countries. We also don’t have enough elected officials or high level appointed officials with the background to understand the most exciting energy innovations on the horizon. Yes, we need incentives and we need to set goals & reward outcomes. But dictating and regulating specific approaches is slow and ineffective. And will lead to more beauty like this being lost forever. Just my thoughts.
