Maternal mortality rates surged in Texas during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Dr. Marcos Sosa, director of women’s health at CommUnityCare Health Centers, points out that limited access to care contributed to the increase in deaths. "My dream is that all hospital systems recruit more OBGYN providers and advance practice providers to come to work in Texas," Sosa said to the Austin American-Statesman. Imagine doulas/Community Health Workers doing home visits. Assessing and referring patients to localized solutions that make sense based on where and how they live. Having this information included in medical charts and care plans. Care needs to start at the community level.
