Day 10 (WOW!) of A Kindness Calendar: Countdown to GivingTuesday is focusing on keeping it green, friends! Middle Tennessee is home to a diverse array of ecosystems, including forests, rivers, and wet meadows, each hosting a variety of wildlife and plant species. Nonprofits dedicated to the environment help protect these habitats from the pressures of urbanization, pollution, and other human activities. These organizations also often serve as a bridge between the community and policymakers, promoting sustainable practices and policies that benefit both the environment and the people living in it. Giving Tuesday is Today! This is the most important day of digital giving all year, with a record $3.2 billion raised in 2022! It's also a critical day for the Alliance for the Great Lakes, as our biggest digital fundraiser of the year.    As someone who is both engaged and charitable, I know you have several causes you support. But if you, or your family live in the Midwest, please consider supporting the Alliance for the Great Lakes. Why? - We're protecting our waters. If you're one of 40 million who live on or near the Lakes...it's where your water comes from. - We're protecting our wildlife. The Great Lakes are 20% of the WORLD's fresh water. The health and well-being of our lakes also support the lives of billions of plants and animals. - We're safeguarding health and wellbeing. The Alliance is leading the charge to mandate statewide replacement of lead service lines, better regulate plastics and prevent them from entering our lakes, and decrease the amount of agricultural runoff. - We're planning for our region’s future. The environment in and around our cities is frequently overlooked when we debate "health and cities" and instead wind up talking about infrastructure planning. Here's another instance where infrastructural expansion and urbanisation have overshadowed one of the area's most important biological characteristics. Despite efforts to bring it back to life, it was ultimately reduced to a cosmetic project. It's time to reconsider how we plan to revitalise these important and delicate assets in our neighbourhoods and metropolitan areas.
