Effective communication is key 🔑 Team dynamics and improving operational effectiveness often hinge on communication. This includes communication style, flows, audience, processes, messaging, format, channel, and more. Communication is more complex than just saying the right words at the right time. This complexity is why change management and internal communications become focal points for many companies as they grow. On an individual level, effective communication can resolve relationships where friction between two people hinders results and impacts morale. Leaders who have worked with me on challenging relationship dynamics often hear some of my favorite phrases, such as: - You know what they say about assumptions - What's left unsaid is unknown - Is that a story or a fact? - Would they recap the conversation how you just did? Another thing I always encourage is assertive communication, both for large-scale company communications, and one-on-one relationships. Where we go so wrong with communication❌ Communication has long been paramount to our survival as humans. Even though the days of where we might lose our head for saying the wrong thing are long gone, it doesn't mean it isn't as important. It is instrumental to the success of business and for the success of the human race in general. It’s essential for a pretty important aspect of both business and humans alike, collaboration. Clear communication is essential for collaboration because it helps to pass on ideas effectively which then helps harness the power for a group to work collectively together. That's what business is isn't it? A big or small group of people trying to work together towards the same goal. Should be easy! Not always the case though. So why after all of these centuries, do we still get it so wrong? Why is it you are left scratching your head after the latest employee comms has gone out? Or after a meeting with a project group has left you walking away feeling even more confused than before. In my experience it is all down to the messaging and if the communicator has put themselves in the shoes of the reader or listener of their message. Too often communications are delivered in a way thats not clear to someone who has never been across the information. Presumptions are made that people know about X or Y when thats not always the case. The key to ensuring your message is understood is to always keep the end user in mind, keep it simple, easy to understand, and focus on what they need to know, not what you want them to know and stay away from fluffy corporate language! Always presume your audience has zero context to your message and if you can, get someone with little context to be a fresh pair of eyes.
