🎯 Estimating and Crafting Timelines: A Delicate Art in Project Management Ever found yourself meticulously planning a project schedule, only to hit a snag when you dive deep into the intricacies of a specific module? It's a scenario I've found myself in more times than I can count. The challenge seems to grow exponentially with the complexity of the tasks at hand. 🔍 Recently, while carving out the timeline for a critical tech module in our latest project, the balancing act between accuracy and flexibility was front and center. It's moments like these when the abstract dances with the concrete — where years of experience, best practices, and a touch of gut instinct converge to form an artful estimation. ✅ Here's what such challenges have taught me: - Communication is Key. Engage with your team members who have the hands-on experience. Their insights are invaluable in identifying potential roadblocks you might not see from a high-level perspective. For example, one of my teammates, Diovi Robinet recently shared this article https://lnkd.in/eRyngCa6 which I found interesting and helpful. He is engaged in achieving a big milestone for our project and is immersed in perfecting his estimates as part of our team. - Embrace Uncertainty. Allocate buffers wisely. It's tempting to project optimism in your timeline, but the reality of software development is that there's always a measure of uncertainty. We will always be optimistic with our estimates, ensure that you as the PM guarantee a buffer. - Iterate and Adapt. Your first estimate likely won't be your last. Regular check-ins and reviews can help to adjust timelines as you gain more clarity or as unforeseen issues arise. 🌟 But here's the silver lining: getting through these challenges is not just a victory for the project, it's a win for your personal growth and your team's evolution. Each team had specific deliverables, and these needed to be synchronized perfectly to ensure a smooth integration phase. Creating Project Schedules by 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗽 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝘂𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝘀 𝗮 𝗡𝗼-𝗚𝗼 ⛔ With One Exception 👇 Throughout my career, I’ve been told that it is easy to create a project schedule. Boss - “Just start from the due date.” Me - “I advise against that.” Why? The project is “Red” before it starts. 💥 It’s human nature to wait until the last possible time to start a task, causing more risk to the schedule, 💥 It takes away any opportunity to complete the project early, 💥 Lastly, scheduling a project by backing up from the due date rarely hits the mark. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝘀𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁? ✅ Create a project schedule with realistic timelines and let the schedule determine the “due dates.” 𝗜𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 “𝗱𝘂𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲,” 👇 ✨ Communicate with the project sponsor and stakeholders that the “due date” is not achievable, ✨ Work with the project sponsor, stakeholders, and team to find workable solutions.
