As many communities gather across our state and nation to celebrate Juneteenth this week, let us all reflect on the past and renew our commitment to a more equitable future. For us at DHEC and the two new agencies we will soon become, our vision for equity is not complete without healthy people living in healthy communities. Celebrated each year on June 19, Juneteenth memorializes the day in 1865 when 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, bringing news of freedom to the formerly enslaved people there. Although in 1863 the Emancipation Proclamation had declared that all enslaved people living in the states that had seceded from the Union, "shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free,” it was only when Union forces took control of an area that these rights could be enforced. As Galveston was one of the last major cities to fall to the Union, Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the South. The African American community in Galveston began celebrating Juneteenth each year with parades, parties, cookouts, church services and other events. It proved to be a compelling tradition. In the past 150 years, Juneteenth has grown to bear significance to communities nationwide as a day to celebrate freedom, progress and triumph over slavery. In fact, on this day three years ago, Juneteenth officially became the 11th federal holiday. As we reflect on Juneteenth and its elevated importance to our nation, we also take pride in the progress we have made at DHEC. Our work significantly reduces health disparities and advances environmental justice for South Carolinians of all races, ethnicities, ages, abilities, sexual orientations and genders. Still, social factors are key determinants for health and environmental equity, often presenting barriers to access. We are committed to building on our agency’s existing efforts to realize our continued vision of healthy people living in healthy communities throughout South Carolina. This includes doing our part to ensure everyone has the opportunity to achieve their optimal health. By working together and taking deliberate action, we can better position ourselves to bridge health equity and environmental justice gaps — for the betterment of all South Carolinians.

Detroit Heals Detroit is launching an initiative to bring radical healing to formerly incarcerated Detroit youth by utilizing travel and youth organizing as a form of resistance in order to reach liberation. This initiative is a Travel Immersion Initiative for Formerly Incarcerated Detroit Youth. No nation has locked up more of its own people per capita than the US. Our goal in this 12-week program is to give these young people their purpose and power back that society otherwise would have tried to take away from them, indefinitely. Giving them a piece of their power back that essentially undercuts the likelihood of recidivism. At the end of the 12-week healing justice/youth organizing institute, all participants will travel to Puerto Rico to connect with youth organizers on the ground there and everything is fully funded. Ultimate Goal: Collect Significant Data to Impact Legislation in a way that combats the restrictions put on individuals who've had contact with the Juvenile In(Justice) System. There is Justice in Black Knowing - REGISTRATIONS CLOSE TOMORROW. Please join this seminar for a critical conversation. This seminar will interrogate the function of coronial inquests for Indigenous peoples who have died in the health system and in custody. Through this, the seminar aims to reimagine justice as not found in the Inquest findings or the recommendations made by Coroners but by reimagining justice as intimately connected to the tireless advocacy of families that insist that the systems causing preventable Indigenous deaths are held accountable. In foregrounding this advocacy work, this seminar explores how coronial processes reinscribe racial violence as it claims to work to prevent future avoidable Indigenous deaths. https://lnkd.in/gw2q9kSz

In 2015, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in a groundbreaking research project called "Who Pays? The True Cost of Incarceration on Families." This experience ultimately led me to become a panelist in Washington, D.C. The report highlighted key recommendations, including the need for restructuring and reinvesting, removing barriers, and restoring opportunities. These recommendations have since been implemented in various ways across the country. As I stood outside the Cannon House Office Building, I gained a deeper understanding of the importance of process and purpose in both individual and collective journeys. Now, my focus is on assisting others in "Turning the Curve," promoting fatherhood engagement, and paving the way for redemption. #CriminalJustice #FamilyImpact https://lnkd.in/eT4Ft7BZ

This 4th of July, we reflect on freedom's evolving meaning in America. Our founders fought for independence and basic liberties. While those were secured for the leading majority, basic rights for many underserved communities remain out of reach. Early Americans sought liberation from an unjust system, yet systemic racism persists in this country, which denies equal opportunity for too many in essential areas of life, including education, housing, and most importantly, healthcare.
