On this #FourthOfJuly, we celebrate the freedom that allows us to thrive, and we honor the men and women who have given their lives for that freedom. We hope today is one for connecting with family, friends and community. And to all those who are serving their communities today - including many of our caregivers - we offer our sincere gratitude. #HappyIndependenceDay #Hellohumankindness

Now mankind does not have to wonder why women in 19th century England started their marches which grew into the FEMINIST movement. Women’s innate will is “to control your husband”. Yes, our youth dying of drug overdoses, the homeless living under bridges, and violence and chaos across America all have their roots in the Women’s Liberation Movement. This is no longer a movement for citizens’ rights for women but women wanting freedom from their duties of being wives and mothers. Here is a topic for discussion at your next online chat or in your church basement. (For further insight on the behaviour of fierce feminists, today, see my article in Further Insights, below.)

Tonight the YWCA Hunter Region Inc. Board of Directors are meeting for the first time in 2024. Ahead of the meeting I have been reflecting on the first 8 weeks of 2024 and the current landscape for the women and families YWCA Hunter works with. Already this year we have seen the reports of women killed by their partners or ex-partners, we have read the challenges faced by women experiencing domestic or gender based violence in accessing adequate support, we have watched commentators diminish the influence and success of one of the most successful touring artists and business women and we continue to see the impact of homelessness and poverty on women, particularly aged 55 and over. Looking forward in the year, tomorrow will see the Workplace Gender Equality Agency publish the first set of private sector employer gaps and we are only one week away from International Womens Day a day of both reflection and advocacy (reminder: it is about more than cupcakes!) So what does this mean for an organisation like YWCA Hunter Region Inc.? It is a reminder to our board of volunteers, our staff and our supporters of why we do the work we do, why we dial in to our meetings after a full day at our jobs, whilst multi-tasking caring responsibilities and trying to remember if we drank enough water today. It is a reminder as to why we run our programs and why we prioritise providing safe and affordable housing to Hunter women aged 55 and why the work of this 100-year-old organisation is just as relevant today. https://lnkd.in/g_i7pFwt

At Modern Widows Club, we understand the importance of recognizing and supporting women who face the greatest exclusions for equity - #widows. Did you know that 70% of all married women will become a widow in their lifetime? For many, several times in their lifetime. Yet, #widowhood remains an invisible status in society with women's events, programs, services and philanthropy, leaving millions of women to face the number one most stressful life event without support. According to the United Nations Progress on the Sustainability Development Goals, it will take 286 years to close the global gender gap. Women’s representation in positions of power and decision-making remains below parity. By recognizing the accomplishments of women, we value her contribution while inspiring other women to do the same. Universal Womens Network™ | Women-Owned The 2016 Global Widows Report identifies four primary causes of suffering among widows globally: financial instability, disinheritance, government neglect, and social exclusion. Inclusion is the first step towards educating others about the catastrophic impacts of the other three issues. It's essential for widow advocates to be represented in all women's initiatives discussing women's issues, as currently, this representation is lacking. We believe that caring for women's causes means also caring for the largest women's cause that remains invisible for support - #widowsupport. Let's inspire change for all women by recognizing and supporting widows. We welcome allies to inspire necessary change in research, philanthropy, government, and social justice.
