We’ve been fortunate in #CNY to be the beneficiaries of two major announcements in as many weeks. Just last week the CNY Community Engagement Committee, in partnership with Empire State Development and Micron Technology, released the Community Priorities Document (https://lnkd.in/eKt6aW33), a plan meant to position the community to best prepare as equitably as possible for the coming growth brought by Micron Technology. These efforts don’t work without massive commitments and leadership. It’s worth recognizing co-chairs of this effort Melanie Littlejohn and Tim Penix, who were joined on the Committee by Kristi Eck, Bishop Ronald B. Dewberry, Donna DeSiato, Joe Nehme, Karen Belcher, Mark S. Hall, Sharon F. Owens, Damian Ulatowsky, Isabelle Harris, Paco Valle, jasenko mondom, Meg O'Connell, Kevin Younis, Kerry Quaglia, Scott Gatzemeier, MBA, and Sheena Solomon. Today we also marked the announcement that the NY SMART I-Corridor received an implementation grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration through the #techhubs program (https://lnkd.in/eFaMG3Se). Anchored by partners in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Ithaca, the I-Corridor is the only semiconductor focused Tech Hub in the country and funded to become the home of domestic end-to-end semiconductor manufacturing. Special thanks to the Buffalo Niagara Partnership and OneROC for helping to convene this work, to Majority Leader Schumer and our entire federal delegation for championing this effort in Washington, to Governor Hochul and Empire State Development for their steadfast partnership, and to our consortium members for joining this effort: Syracuse University, University at Buffalo, Monroe Community College, Wolfspeed, Global Foundries, U.S. , Inc., Menlo Micro, INFICON, Corning Incorporated, Optimax Systems, Inc., TTM Technologies, Saab, Akoustis, Inc. (AKTS), L3Harris Technologies, and Lockheed Martin. While seemingly different in their size and scale both efforts prove two things: 1. inclusive and equitable economic development can, and should, be done at scale, and 2. #UpstateNY is back.

Most Americans don’t have to think twice about using the internet for work, or school, or managing a household, or applying for a job — but millions of Americans still lack access or skills needed to navigate the online world. Like Gia, a senior at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, who this morning connected to UC Berkeley's website from our SALEF Connected Learning Center to accept their offer of admission. Congratulations, Gia! To help more people like Gia connect to greater possibilities, AT&T today announced that we are extending our digital divide commitment to $5 billion, with a goal to help 25 million people get and stay connected online by 2030. While we’ve made significant progress, having reached almost 5 million people since 2021, our renewed commitment shows that we’re doubling down to help narrow the digital divide. #DigitalDivide #TeamATT

Before this weekend is completely gone, I must say a few words about Johnnie and Alex Turnage and Black Tech Saturdays (BTS). I had the privilege of attending yesterday along with the U-M Urban Entrepreneurship Practicum students (@umcfe). Though I have spent many years engaging with entrepreneur ecosystems and attending related events, I must say that I was blown away by BTS. Johnnie and Alexa have truly created something special, a place where everyone from curious newbies to seasoned company founders can feel welcome, inspired, appreciated, connected, and valued. If a community wants to build a truly powerful entrepreneurship ecosystem, the leaders must cast a wide net and include more than the "usual suspects." Johnnie and Alexa recognize this, but BTS consists of much more than just gathering people and presenting speeches. I can tell that they put a lot of thought and effort into their programming. Kudos to everyone associated with Black Tech Saturdays. This community really feels like the start of something big and highly beneficial for Detroit, and I look forward to contributing in some way to your success. Thank you for graciously welcoming and inspiring me and my students. One more thing: I'm looking forward to following up with old and new friends I encountered yesterday. One of these is Caleb Brazier, an outstanding U-M engineering grad who moved to Seattle to work for Microsoft and is now back in the D working for Google. Just one example of the talent that seems to be coming home.

I love this concept of “majoring in the future.” Choosing a job path for the next 40 years in college feels like a fool’s errand these days. Whatever the job is now will be very different in 20 years. There’s a good chance that the job you have 20 years from now is a role or industry that doesn’t exist today. And I think anybody my age or younger is resigned to never being able to retire unless you’re in the top 5-10% of having either 6-figure income or 7-figure wealth.
Erna Schneider Hoover ’48 made her mark as a computer technology pioneer, but her career wasn’t one she could have planned for while at Wellesley. The computer science department is only 40 years old, and Hoover just celebrated her 75th reunion. We rightly focus a lot on nurturing young people's creativity, innovation and collaboration - but it's less often that we think about whether we embody this as a global education community. It's essential to achieve our goals. Find out more from Euan Wilmshurst, who recently shared his thoughts on the power of creativity and partnerships for our blog: https://lnkd.in/eBqCvu-4

Program Manager in Higher Education working with unrepresentative undergraduate. Corporate Partner Representative
Hi all! As many of you know, I have returned to the University of Colorado Boulder - Leeds School of Business in the Office of Diversity Affairs as a Program Manager. Part of my role is hosting Zoom/Lunch & Learns for the Leeds Diverse Scholars & Corporate Partners. These events are a fantastic way for students to network and connect with organization, but also learn information to help them on academic and career journeys. Many of our students are First Generation students and/or from historically underrepresented communities. Being a First Gen Scholar ( and DSPer) myself, there are lots of things I did not know in undergrad and most of them were items I didn't know that I didn't know. So please share with me the topics you wished you had learned at university. Please fill out this survey to help develop topics for future Zoom/Lunch & Learns. https://lnkd.in/gBi6hvAT Also, connecting with the Leeds Diverse Scholar you can find more information below: https://lnkd.in/gbefcPmW https://lnkd.in/gKWK9NB4 Edit: I invited everyone to take the survey, all perspectives are welcome. We will also using the information for our Adulting 101 course for graduating seniors
