Interested in the UK energy transition?
New year, new job? I’m recruiting for a Senior External Affairs Manager to join our team at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. This is genuinely one of the most interesting briefs in government right now. You’ll work on policies to secure the UK’s energy supply, bring down bills and achieve Net Zero. You’ll work closely with Ministers, senior officials and stakeholders (businesses, interest groups, civil society) across the energy sector. We’re looking for someone with public affairs, stakeholder engagement or wider communications experience. The role is open to people inside and outside of government. Having the right skills is more important than particular knowledge of the sector. Do reach out to me if you’d like a chat before the deadline closes.

In 2023, global CO₂ emissions in the energy sector soared to an unprecedented high, with a 1.1% increase to reach 37.4 billion tons, even as the world pushes towards renewable energy. This uptick, driven by China's economic expansion and global droughts reducing hydropower output, underscores the complex challenges facing our climate goals. Notably, while emissions from many industrialized nations declined, reflecting a shift towards cleaner energy, the overall increase highlights the urgent need for more widespread action. At CO2 Management, we're committed to turning the tide on these trends. By innovating in carbon return and supporting the transition to renewable energy, we aim to combat the disproportionate impact of fossil fuels and uneven renewable energy growth. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports rapid advances in renewable energy, with renewables growing twice as fast as fossil fuels from 2019 to 2023. Yet, this progress is primarily concentrated in advanced economies and China, pointing to a significant gap in global efforts. Our mission aligns with the IEA's call for broader renewable energy adoption. By focusing on scalable, impactful solutions, we strive to ensure that the transition to clean energy is not just rapid but also inclusive, reaching beyond advanced economies to the entire world. Read more about how global CO₂ emissions in the energy sector reached a new peak in 2023, influenced by economic factors and environmental challenges, on our website: https://lnkd.in/dakWb996 #ClimateAction #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #CO2Emissions #CleanEnergyTransition #CO2Management

CNP status makes consultation and engagement even more critical for solar schemes With the development of low-carbon infrastructure, such as solar farms, now classified as a “critical national priority”, it should make gaining planning consent easier for developers, but it will likely increase local community opposition to schemes. The recently published Research Briefing titled ‘Planning for Solar Farms’ in the House of Commons Library states: “The majority of respondents (88%) surveyed by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) in spring 2023 expressed general support for the use of solar power in the UK. However, only around half (54%) of those surveyed said they would be happy about a solar farm in their local area.” Furthermore, in written evidence solar developer Lightsource bp stated: “There is a growing support and recognition for the need for renewables across the UK in light of the urgency to address climate change and the need to ensure domestic energy security, however there is still an element of NIMBY or local political opposition, and further work is required to gain the support of host communities.” The prospect of gaining the support of host communities is significantly enhanced by early and sincere public engagement and working with local stakeholders, including opposition groups. Having successfully supported developers to gain consent for eight solar schemes to date, our experience is that developers need to counter the impression that communities are having schemes imposed upon them, and the new planning guidance will only increase the potential for communities to feel ‘put upon’. It may feel counter-intuitive but, as planning guidance moves further in favour of permitting solar development, it becomes more important to engage and work with local communities as residents increasingly feel that the system is against them, resulting in the potential for greater and more passionate opposition. While the odds have moved in favour of development, it is not the time for developers to sit back and rely on the planning regime for success, as the need to ‘sell’ the benefits of projects to local communities will become ever more significant. https://lnkd.in/ghw3ZzE
