It is the Day of the Seafarer today. A day internationally recognized to honor the invaluable contributions of seafarers to global trade and economies. While it is a day of celebration, it's an opportunity to highlight challenges: Shore Leave: The joy of setting foot on land is a rare privilege for many seafarers. Stringent port regulations and tight turnaround times often restrict their ability to enjoy well-deserved shore leave, impacting their well-being and mental health. Dignity in Travel: Seamless travel across airports is a dream. Quite often, seafarers are the ones who are asked "can you step aside, sir" by the immigration and whose bags are opened by the customs. Dignity in Ports: Instances of harassment in ports remain troublingly common. This not only affects their personal experiences but also taints the perception of the maritime industry and the country. Customs coming with a shopping list! PSCOs threatening detention! Port Authorities threatening delays. Criminalization: Seafarers risk of being unjustly criminalized for maritime incidents beyond their control. This is a grim reality that many seafarers face in unfamiliar jurisdictions. While we celebrate The Day, let's also push for tangible changes. The accountability mechanisms in our industry is currently geared to foster mistrust. We need policies that truly support seafarers rights, enhances dignity and develops trust. #DayOfTheSeafarer #Maritime #SeafarerRights

International Seafarers Day, let's spend a minute to be aware of this: "The Day of the Seafarer is a time to celebrate and recognize the two million people around the world who operate the ships that carry more than 80% of the volume of world trade. Seafarers are vital in ensuring a seamless flow of essential goods that eventually make it into markets, homes, and onto our tables. Without them, the world would not be able to transport the large quantities of commodities that societies require to survive. But their own lives have been put on the line in the face of grave threats. Attacks on international shipping routes and acts of piracy are unacceptable. Ships and seafarers must not be held hostage and hijacked. Seafarers should not be collateral victims in wider geopolitical conflicts. Seafarers from across the globe provide a vital source of income to their families back home, while on long voyages at sea. Let us together salute them for their essential work and support their safety." ~UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres #safetytipsatsea #Seafarers #IMO

Day of Seafarers is annually commemorated every 25th of June by the maritime community, to recognise the contribution that seafarers make to our everyday lives. The role of seafarers often goes underappreciated within the maritime industry and by the general public. Seafarers are an essential component in world trade, keeping the economy moving and delivering the goods and fuels we use every day. They are professionals who operate and maintain cargo vessels and other types of ships. They are generally responsible for the safety and security of their shipmates and the cargo they have on board. They also manage all aspects of a ship's maintenance and repairs, which can be anything from minor fixes to major overhauls. Due to the nature of their work, seafarers are often away from home for long period, and have unfortunately been subjected to poor labour treatment and training. The Day of the Seafarer was established in a resolution adopted by the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila to adopt the revised International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers Convention (STCW Convention). Its stated purpose is to recognize the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole. The resolution "encourages government, shipping organizations, companies, shipowners and all other parties concerned to duly and appropriately promote the Day of the Seafarer and take action to celebrate it meaningfully". #IMO #seafarers #maritime
