Today we recognize World MS Day! Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). Today, an estimated 2.9 million people around the world have MS. World MS Day is special to Potomac not only because of our relationships with clients who are passionate about developing therapies for this disease, but also because it affects one of our own. Potomac Director Rachel Bunting was diagnosed with MS in 2015. Rachel shared her #MyMSDiagnosis story with us: “In December 2014, my right hand went numb in the middle of a karate class. In the days that followed, the sensation spread to my left hand and traveled up both arms. By the time I arrived at the neurologist’s office for an initial consult a week later, the numbness was occurring in both legs and my abdomen – the aptly named ‘MS Hug.’ It took about eight weeks to confirm a diagnosis. During that time, I tracked my symptoms on a daily basis and shared my tracking log with the doctor. This made it easier to identify the appropriate testing, which led to quick and accurate diagnosis. Nearly 10 years later, I have a great medical care team and a strong support system at home and at work. My colleagues regularly look out for and check in with me, my manager (Jonathan Wilkenfeld) works hard to balance my workload and make sure I am not overextending myself, and my clients are incredibly thoughtful and understanding. World MS Day is a day of global solidarity, collective action and hope! Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). Today, an estimated 2.9 million people around the world have MS. Every five minutes someone, somewhere in the world is diagnosed with MS. World MS Day is officially marked as the 30 May, and for 2024 the focus is around diagnosis, advocating for early and accurate diagnosis for everyone living with MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40. MS is two to three times more common in women than in men. There is no drug that can cure MS, but treatments are available which can modify the course of the disease. Anosmia Awareness Day - February 27th, 2024 Today, February 27, is Anosmia Awareness Day, a worldwide campaign that raises awareness of the often-overlooked ailment of anosmia, which is the loss of smell. Anosmia, sometimes known as "nose blind," is not a minor issue since it may lead to major disorders such as Alzheimer's in the future. Our sense of smell is important for noticing possible risks in our environment, such as smoke or hazardous toxins. Furthermore, our olfactory function plays an important role in our capacity to taste and general well-being. By honoring Anosmia Awareness Day, we want to educate the public about the seriousness of anosmia and urge preventive actions. This observation provides a chance to learn about the causes of anosmia and the many therapies available, giving hope for relief and recovery.
