Here are a few reminders for the extended holiday weekend! Add yours for fun! It's okay that the aunt you see once a year is worried that you are laid off again. Most people do NOT understand the pharma / biotech industry. It's okay if your parents think you are nuts for still applying to more #medicalscienceliaison roles even though you haven't gotten an interview. Others do NOT understand how tough it is to land that first MSL role. It's okay if your mother-in-law asks you if you are traveling a lot and how the children are handling it. She doesn't know how you parent when you ARE present. It's okay if you don't feel like celebrating with friends or family because you need some downtime after covering medical conferences. As we continue the #MedComms Day celebrations, we are excited to share Holly Joscelyne's experience working in the sector. Holly is a Senior Account Director at Cuttsy and Cuttsy and she kindly answered some questions about her career for us. ➡ How did you get into MedComms? I fell into med comms! I did a Business Management degree at university which included an industry placement year. Although I was unsure of my career path at the time, for my placement I landed a position in the communications team of a pharmaceutical company. In that role, I worked with an external agency who offered me a job after graduating. I dabbled in similar roles outside of healthcare but nothing gave me the purpose or motivation like this industry does - for me, it's so important to believe in what you do! ➡ What do you do in your role? My role is incredibly diverse, but essentially, I serve as the main point of contact for our clients. I listen to their challenges, collaborate with a talented team to develop solutions, and manage projects from initial scoping to final delivery. I also collaboratively lead our client services team, mentoring team members, supporting the implementation of new processes and driving business growth. ➡ What do you enjoy about your work? No two days are the same in agency life. It's fast-paced and challenging - which is exactly why I enjoy it! The variation in work keeps things interesting, but the most rewarding part is hearing the impact a piece of work has. From a simple visual that helps to explain a complex medical process in an easy-to-understand way, through to a far-reaching co-created educational campaign. Whatever it is, when I hear how it has helped and supported someone, it reminds me why I am proud of what I do! As a teenager, I wanted to become the next Minister of Health. Here’s what I did instead. 🧪👀 I learned at a young age that there isn’t one direct career path you must follow. In school, I had a focus on international relations, but at 17 years old, I took part in a one-year program in Italy. There, I not only fell in love with pizza and pasta but also with science. 🍝🍕🧪 The years after and during my pharmacy studies, I had the dream of becoming the next Minister of Health. I wanted to be a woman at the top. And I am still striving to be one but not in politics anymore. 👉 During my PharmD program, I began working for Chiesi Slovakia as a Medical Sales Representative and later as a Key Account Manager as well as a Medical Science Liaison in Special Care. Today I’m working as a Senior Medical Science Liaison in Primary Care. In hindsight, I wouldn’t change a thing. ✨ During my entire career path, I was open to new opportunities and took the chances that arose when I put work into it. Each step of my career path shaped me. That’s why I would recommend everyone to be open-minded to new chances and challenges. “You will never make it here. I give you 2 months.” ☠ That is how I was greeted when I joined Medtronic 14 years ago. What triggered this “warm” welcome, was the email announcing I was joining. 💬 It detailed my past experiences in fundraising for nonprofits, selling in the hospitality industry and work in the financial industry in New York. I had no medical background. ❌ I did not fit in. I was thus not going to make it. That. Simple. Too simple? Indeed, there are now plenty of studies showing that hiring for cultural & background fit is overrated and often a big mistake as: ✅ It leads to stagnation as it discourages fresh ideas and new perspectives. ✅ It promotes a culture of bias and discrimination as diversity is not actively promoted. When hiring, I now make a conscious effort not to weight team or cultural fit more than I should in my final decision. ➕instead of focusing solely on cultural fit I always try to consider hiring for cultural add. ➕ Candidates with the right skills AND a different background will bring something new and valuable to our organizations. It surely does not feel like I ever been ‘stuck’. Today is my 30th day of unemployment, for the first time since I’ve entered a workforce at the age of 17. It is extremely weird and uncomfortable at times and so exciting as well! I have already met and talked with so many incredible people, I am truly thankful for everyone who gave me their time, offered support, introductions and advice, I am taking it all in, I am learning. With quite a unique blend of experiences in #dtcmarketing #b2bmarketing #medtech #digitalhealth #pharma #businesstransformation in various markets from Eastern Europe to UK, Regional and Global levels, I find it hard to land on a job title that I am after.🤔 But I am sure I’ll get there in my own time.🤓 𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞, 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐬𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫, 𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐩 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐌 𝐦𝐞! P.S. And besides, who knew that one can have a break from work without needing to produce another human being?! 😅
