Defence Research Centre, and Impact & Partnership Development Manager - Working to enhance meaningful societal development & protection
Many Devon folk & those further afield with an interest & passion for a sustainable and mindful economy, are probably aware of the challenging times presently taking place for Totnes’ Schumacher College. Last week the Dartington Trust pulled the college’s courses and shut down the facility, with little messaging to the faculty, students and local community on what the future for Schumacher looked like. A day before lessons were scheduled to begin, students and staff were left waiting outside the college, wondering what the future held for them. Many left jobs, homes and countries. Staff have been put on 0 hour contracts and silenced to speak on the topic. This resurrects the painful local story of when Dartington Arts had to move from the local community roughly 10 years ago. People in the town of Totnes still grieve this loss and still speak of the cultural and economic impact Totnes faced after all the studying artistits left the town. History feels to be repeating itself, with the Dartington Trust being key decision makers on Totnes’ cultural presence and significance. Sadly Dartington Trust’s decisions leave our town once again at risk of losing its energetic heritage: knowledge, mindfulness, creativity, innovation, community integrity and sustainability activism. Schumacher College is recognised the globe over as an innovating space of progressive thought and conscious action in the spaces of regeneration and sustainability. These values and actions deeply resonate with Totnes’ significant history and proactive future. Losing the Schumacher College would be a repeated wound to the town of Totnes and add to the already harmed reputation of the Dartington Trust in the eyes of Totnes’ community. During my recent Exeter Innovation away day I envisioned a time when the University of Exeter and the Schumacher College could meet and collaborate on their shared values and educational work. Let us hope that Schumacher’s future finds its security once more, so the wider economy and educational systems of Devon can continue to benefit. The college is now exploring routes towards independence from the Dartington Trust. Please watch this space for opportunities to contribute towards fundraising. #totnes #schmachercollege #dartingtontrust #highereducation

VP & ED @ Forsyth Tech Foundation | Advocate for Equitable Philanthropic Education | Philanthropy Nerd | Consultant
I've been sharing with donors and prospective donors this week that Forsyth Technical Community College has been certified as an Achieving the Dream Leader College. The most common question has been, what does that mean? Short Answer: This is a recognition of the impact Forsyth Tech has made and continues to make by embracing and emboldening our institutions Trailblazing Spirit. Long Answer: Being a Forsyth Tech Trailblazer means being part of a dynamic and forward-thinking community that values innovation, inclusion, and success. Trailblazers at Forsyth Tech are students and learners who are actively engaged in shaping their futures through education and personal development. They are driven, ambitious, and determinated to succeed, not just in their academic pursuits but also in their future careers and contributions to community empowerment and transformation. As Trailblazers, students faculty and staff at Forsyth Tech are encouraged to push boundaries, explore new ideas, and embrace opportunities for growth and learning. They are part of an institution that supports their journey towards achieving their goals, while offering the tools, resources, and guidance needed to navigate their educational and career paths successfully. Forsyth Tech's commitment to being "A Place of Promise" is an integral component of the Trailblazer ethos. Striving to provide an environment where every student is empowered to forge their own path, overcome obstacles, and reach their full potential. This includes providing equitable access to education, fostering a culture of excellence, and preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of the modern world. In essence, being a Trailblazer at Forsyth Tech means being an active participant in a journey of transformation – personally, academically, and professionally – in an environment that champions innovation, inclusivity, and success. That is how we lead and why this recognition is an honor.
Have you heard?! Forsyth Tech has been named 1 of 10 colleges in the US as an Achieving the Dream LEADER COLLEGE! We celebrated through drone photo at our faculty & staff All Team Day! Thanks to all the elected officials and others who came to celebrate with us! #APlaceOfPromise

Well I can't wait to hear Robbie MacIsaac next week at the WeDO Scotland Glasgow Networking Breakfast on Thursday 12th October! Robbie is only 22 and is in his final year on the University of Strathclyde’s BEng Product Design Engineering course. When he was just 14, he pioneered the FLUX Blowpipe, a device which ultimately could prevent respiratory issues for bagpipers. While still a schoolboy, Robbie was named the UK’s Most Innovative Young Engineer by the Manufacturing Technologies Association by winning the Technology Design Innovation challenge. In 2019 Robbie became a Scottish Edge Wild Card winner, following up with further success a year later when he won the Scottish Young Edge prize, securing five-figure funding as a reward. He was also a finalist at the Business Insider Made In Scotland Awards 2020. Since leaving school, as well as attending Uni, Robbie has been growing his business, FLUX Solutions, with increased interest and custom from the US, Canada, France, Germany, Australia and New Zealand complementing sales in the UK. You also may have seen Robbie pipe his way on to Dragons' Den on BBC1 earlier this year! And as if this wasn't enough, whilst doing my homework on Robbie I came across these wise words from him: "My school's motto, 'Labor Omnia Vincit', Latin for, 'Work Conquers All,' has stuck with me. But I vividly remember my Headmaster, Mark Lauder, stressed this motto is not just about putting in the hours - it's about tackling difficult and tedious work when the going is tough. That is what creates growth." So if you want to see and hear Robbie, come along to Glaschu in Glasgow next Thursday from 8.30am to 10am! There will also be ample opportunity to network and make new connections. And thank you to Sara Davies MBE for this fabulous shot! Link to book: https://lnkd.in/enNjaM7Q

I am incredibly impressed by Purdue's 3-Minute Thesis finalists, especially Paul Knudsen. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about his creative solutions to island disaster response logistics in the presentation below, given how unfortunately common it is these days. For those looking to geek out on the need for building resilient systems, fostering institutional collaboration, and capitalizing on competitive advantages check out his paper --> https://lnkd.in/gHuWbqS3
Purdue's 3-Minute Thesis Competition just culminated in the finals! Nine other finalists and I executively pitched our thesis work in less than three minutes and only one slide. The video of my pitch is available here: https://lnkd.in/gu2Dsyej
