The ACCC has approved Coles Group's acquisition of two fresh milk processing plants from Saputo Dairy, making it the only supermarket in Australia to own and operate a milk processor. Coles says the deal will improve its milk supply security and innovation capacity. However, some dairy farmers are concerned that the deal will reduce competition and lower milk prices. They argue that Coles will have too much market power and influence over the dairy industry. New Dairy processing facility in Valdosta

Woolworths stopped stocking award winning Norco milk in 150 metro stores in Sydney, threatening the viability of Australia’s oldest dairy co-operative (the last of its kind), owned by hundreds of farming families. Norco says shopping with them means all profits stay right here in Australia and make their way back into our local communities.  Was it because, the co-op has no external shareholders or foreign ownership - there is no lining of the pockets of offshore companies or foreign shareholders? 🤔 If you care about this country, stop buying from companies that push the agenda. Some exciting news in the #food and #drink industry this week: 1. Oatly shares have crashed once again as the embattled plant-based group drastically cut its sales outlook for the year. The oat milk producer now forecasts revenue growth for 2023 in the range of 7% to 12% year on year, down from the 23% to 28% jump it predicted at the time of its annual 2022 results in March. 2. Morrisons the UK supermarket chain has invested £2 million in a year long scheme that will cover the costs of participating farmers. Potato and carrot farmers have been the first to take advantage. With one carrot farm and three potato farms currently receiving the support. 3. ABP Food Group acquisition of Scotbeef Limited meat plants to face competition authority probe, The Competition and Markets Authority's (CMA) initial enforcement asking whether a merger could result in “a substantial lessening of competition” in a particular market. The order compels the two parties not to integrate the Scotbeef business into the ABP operation, to avoid the transfer of ownership or control of the business and to avoid the impairment of the Scotbeef business. 4. Greggs to open standalone cafés in Sainsbury's stores for the first time. The pair partnered for the first time earlier this year when a Greggs opened a concession in an existing Sainsbury’s garage in Bedfordshire and suggested further openings were planned. 5. Tennessee-based Ole Smoky Distillery, LLC has entered the Tequila category after agreeing to a merger with Tanteo Spirits LLC. Whiskey producer Ole Smoky said the deal is part of the company’s plan to diversify its portfolio across other ‘high-growth’ spirits categories. #plantbased #acquisition #grocery
