#ReformingRA 🥳The OGS has officially become a member of CoARA the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment that aims to redefine research assessment methods and practises. 🖋In January 2022, CoARA began drafting an Agreement on Research Evaluation Reform involving more than 350 organisations from over 40 countries. The result was a document that provides a shared path for change in assessment practises for research, researchers and organisations conducting research, with the overarching goal of maximising the quality and impact of research. 📃As a member of CoARA, the OGS, which has already signed the agreement, will become an active part of this participatory reform movement aimed at a higher quality, more effective, efficient and inclusive research system. 🔎https://lnkd.in/dDyGeGpz

My dear colleague Satu Lähteenoja defended her doctoral thesis yesterday on title Advancing Sustainability Transformations: Co-design for Sustainable Development Policies. The defence itself was captivating - good television - thanks to the timely topic and clever opponent Per Mickwitz. Here are three (3) take-home points why the book is a good read for people actively dealing with sustainability transformation policies, practices and/or science. 🌱 First, pure existence of the thesis strengthens and legitimises many of the transformative research efforts. One can (and should) be critical about the level direct impact of knowledge co-production at the current times, but that is now more a question of how interaction is conducted rather than whether such processes are valid. 🍀 Second, Satu's thesis documents and discusses cases (especially article 5) of how co-productive research has been conducted in direct interaction with policy processes. This also opens up further avenues of building more critical roles for transformative policy evaluation through co-design. 🌳 Third, book provides an epistemological map on transition arena knowledge co-production methodologies. The intervowen literatures are well descriped and provide a clear reference point for future work from complementary perspectives. I wish all the best for Satu in the next phase of her professional life. Leiden secured the 6th spot in ICCA's national conference destination ranking for 2023. ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) annually ranks cities based on conference factors such as rotation in countries, frequency, and participant numbers. The first position is held by Amsterdam, followed by Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, and Maastricht. Leiden hosted 16 ICCA-approved international conferences in 2023, ranking 81st in Europe and 143rd globally. With strong collaboration among our city partners, we successfully host international scientific conferences in Leiden, despite the absence of large-scale convention centers. Connecting multiple venues in Leiden transforms the historic city center into the conference floor. Miranda Geerlings, manager of Leiden Convention Bureau, is pleased with the result. "Our 6th position in the annual ranking is a remarkable achievement for the 22nd most populated city in the Netherlands. It's a reward for the efforts of Leiden Convention Bureau, our conference ambassadors, and all our conference partners. The title of European City of Science 2022 has given the city of Leiden a place in the spotlight of science on a European scale. I believe that this title has been and will continue to be a great magnet for international conferences and associations to choose Leiden as their destination. I would like to draw your attention to CoARA, the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment. Today, during the monthly community event of APNet - Assistant Professor Network Netherlands, we had the pleasure to hear an insightful presentation by CoARA programme manager Erzsébet Tóth-Czifra, who talked about #CoARA's vision, commitments, activities, working groups, and importantly the #agreement in place, already signed by hundreds of university, associations, research centers, academies and funding organizations across Europe and beyond 👌 CoARA's vision in a nutshell includes that the #assessment of #research, researchers and research organisations recognises the diverse outputs, practices and activities that maximise the #quality and #impact of research; and this requires basing assessment primarily on qualitative judgement, for which #peerreview is central, supported by responsible use of quantitative indicators. Such calls may originate in some major concerns: First, scientific disciplines act more and more like silos, that do not communicate well, if at all. Specialization of and within disciplines closes their relevance and communication with other knowledge areas. Second, humanity faces a number of wicked problems (Crowley & Head, 2017), typically addressed as grand societal challenges (OECD 2020).
