Following the recent publication of the 2023 admission figures from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions, Richard Huntrods our Director of Audiences, Research, and Insights shares his thoughts: “It was great to see audiences return to some of my favourite organisations in the 2023 figures published by ALVA last week – attendances jumping up by almost 20% on 2022. This is no doubt due to the huge post-pandemic upswing in international visits last year (up by over 6 million on 2022) and the innovative programming and marketing efforts. Whilst the growth is great news, figures remaining significantly behind 2019 attendances and reflect similar trends seen in the number coming from DCMS sponsored museums and galleries – still down 27% on 2018/19. Interestingly, these figures contrast markedly with the performing arts, where factors including the desire for a sense of community and shared immersive experiences are helping West End and live experiences of all kinds hit record numbers across the UK.”

In today's troubled times, I find myself seeing the value of museums as a tool for teaching tolerance more and more. Museums play a crucial role by providing a platform for understanding diverse cultures, histories, and perspectives. Through thoughtfully curated exhibits and educational programs, museums foster empathy and awareness by showcasing the experiences and contributions of different communities. By highlighting stories of struggle, resilience, and cooperation, museums encourage visitors to reflect on issues of prejudice, discrimination, and social justice. This helps build a more inclusive and compassionate society, where individuals appreciate and respect each other's differences. In this way, museums are vital in promoting tolerance and mutual understanding, and in this current global climate, we need as much of that as possible.

Public trust is fundamental to the mission of museums. Museums preserve natural and cultural resources for public benefit, ensuring that collections are accessible for study, enjoyment, and learning. According to the American Alliance of Museums Code of Ethics, museums in the United States are grounded in the tradition of public service, holding their collections and information as a benefit for those they serve. Museums must uphold the highest levels of accountability and transparency to maintain this trust. Key standards include responsible stewardship of resources, identifying and serving community needs, inclusivity, educational commitment, and compliance with legal standards. This is a high bar to clear and an important pillar in our local, state, national, and international communities. (In terms of characteristics f.ex. I belive curiosity and being comfortable in explorative work methods is necessary, but isn't something you have on your CV).

Where does the word "Latino" comes from, National Medal of Honor Museum? The terms "Latina" (female) & "Latino" (male) derives from the Latin word "Latinus," which means "of Latium" (the region of central Italy where Rome was founded). This term referred to the people of Latium, by extension to the broader Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, the Latin language & the culture spread all across Europe EU & into the Iberian Peninsula. The people of the Iberian Peninsula, which includes modern Spain & Portugal, "adopted el Latin", which evolved into the "Romance Languages": Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian & Romanian. In the late 20th century the word began to be used, especially in the context of identity within South America & the U.S. Hispanic communities. These terms evolved in the American continent, north & south, as part of a broader effort to define shared cultural & ethnic identity. #Hispanic, distinctly, only describes people from all Spanish-speaking countries - linguistic.
