My dog, עמיגו Amigo, is part of the working dog breed group. That is, a breed developed to do a very specific job and to do it very well, i.e., a talent. I have never had any formal training in talent acquisition, accommodation or management, so I knew it was going to be an OJT type of deal. I never refuse a challenge just because it is challenging, so I adopted him at 4 years of experience/life, after he was let go by his previous employer/owner. Amigo was not a very utilized and satisfied worker, which go hand in hand. He was misguided, maladjusted and quite frustrated. I realized I was going to have to disrupt his career with some of that innovation that is often more boasted than practiced. With a can do attitude, regular check ins focused on empowerment and alignment of expectations, alongside top tier benefits and industry leading incentives, we were set for success, and I am happy to share that he has ended his historic role as a fearless guard dog and promoted to senior lap dog and big data chewing specialist at Avi, Margaux & Alphie intl. It’s my last day at FreshBooks before I start a new adventure, and recently I’ve been reflecting on what this place has meant to me. Forgive me for my first ever #LinkedInEssay, but I’m feeling pensive and I like to write 😅 I joined FreshBooks in March 2016 in the Finance department as a Financial Reporting Manager, left as Controller almost 5 years later, then rejoined in August 2021 to help kick off a new Product Operations role. I’ve learned so much and am so grateful for that opportunity. But more and more I’ve realized that the biggest lesson I’ve learned here is the power of making personal connections. As much as I love face to face time, the past few years and the foreseeable future will continue to be spent online in back to back Zooms with an accompanying endless stream of Slack messages. It can be hard, and exhausting, to make real connections. But it’s not impossible! And it’s important to foster and nurture connections. FreshBooks used to have a question on an employee census survey that was something like, “do you have a best friend at work?” There was always understandably a lot of chatter about the question— there’s something a bit juvenile about the term “best friend” and also sometimes you just want a divide between personal life and work. But I think if you push past that, it’s a valuable concept to think about. Who are your people at work? Do you have colleagues you can talk to openly and honestly? Can you say you have fun at work? We spend at least 8 hours a day working. With that significant amount of time, why not do everything you can to make sure you enjoy it on every level? Professional satisfaction is important, but imagine you could also have a good time too? When I think about the best work I did, it comes hand in hand with people I genuinely consider friends, and I don’t think the work would’ve been as satisfying without that connection: Working with George Taleporos to bridge FP&A and ARC, with Sheila Alberni, CPA, CA to perfect month-end closes, with Stefano Grossi to revamp QBRs, with Chitra Unnikrishnan on segmentation work. (I also learned the importance of good relationships by watching Levi Cooperman, who was friends with absolutely everyone.) So: embrace small talk on Zooms and if someone says something that sounds interesting, message them about it later! Set up 15 minute chats just because! Sometimes it’s okay to “waste” a meeting talking more about your personal lives instead! It all adds up and builds into better work, and more importantly increased happiness. I’m grateful I learned this at FreshBooks. Thank you, friends ♥️🥹🙏 (I’ve posted this picture before, but it really shows how my daughter was just a toddler when I started and has grown up so much in the meantime. I relate!)

Embarking on a journey through education and diverse experiences, I am humbled by the path that has brought me to where I am today. Steering the ship as a General Manager at Ruby Tuesday while navigating the intricacies of financials ignited a passion that guided me toward the world of accounting. The thrill of making a meaningful impact on both the store and its operations fueled my ambition to pursue accounting studies at Jacksonville State University. My professional journey commenced at 16, and in every role undertaken, I carved a path to leadership. From Old Navy to CVS, and even a detour to Ruby Tuesday as a server/bartender turned Assistant Manager and eventually General Manager, each step was a testament to my commitment and adaptability. The challenges of managing a low-budget Ruby Tuesday store deepened my resourcefulness, leading to significant reductions in food waste and turnover. Transitioning into the accounting realm, my journey with Keep Smart Books unfolded. Swiftly rising from Senior Accountant to managing a team and handling a substantial client load, I honed my skills. Yet, challenges persisted as the impact of COVID forced closures and changes. As a General Manager for Ruby Tuesday, my store's closure due to COVID was a blow, but it became a catalyst for my accounting career. The abrupt transition led me to Colorado to pursue a Master's and join Keep Smart Books, a transformative experience where I managed a myriad of clients across the nation. While the role was rewarding, it highlighted a gap – a need for more personalized attention and service for clients. This realization fueled the birth of Satellite Strategies. My passion for making a genuine difference in clients' lives found a home in a firm dedicated to providing the support and understanding they deserve. The journey from GM to Senior Accountant, and now a co-founder at Satellite Strategies, showcases a relentless pursuit of growth and commitment to client success. As I reflect on this journey, I am grateful for the challenges, triumphs, and lessons that have shaped Satellite Strategies. I made it to year three in a doctorate program, that I truly loved. Life happened, and the financial/personal cost led me to pause the work and use my education in non-higher ed. environments, where I was hoping I'd end up. But, hey, Soli Deo gloria! Coda's doctorate program didn't take me as long 🤣 and it wasn't as hard 😝 , but it's proved one of the best decisions I've made in the last year to further my organizational skills than everything else. If you want a little tour of some of the different documents I've created, let me know. 1) I've built a personalized Disc Golf putting program 2) a CRM for a blackberry selling business with marketing and invoicing 3) a meeting note documentation system that automatically pulls from your Google calendar and can send automated emails/surveys 4) a dashboard for a call center Queue that pulls data daily and helps track KPIs 5) a Monday board replacement that is about to be used for onboarding at three various sized companies, representing about 1800 clients. I will refrain from asking people call me Dr. Potter. Nobody needs that. Excited to keep dreaming with Coda in both work and my personal life. Attended the "High-performance habits in tech and finance" Stripe event this morning with some colleagues and PPRO's very own Angela Hull was on the panel alongside Fanny Talagrand & Callan Carvey, sharing some great wisdom around building successful careers. Some key takeaways for me: - You cannot expect good things to happen just because you have a deep sense of belief that that you are doing a good job. You need to go out there and make it know, ask for what you want and what you deserve 📢 - It's not always about working harder, figure out ways to work smarter 💡 - Pay it forward where you can 🤝 - Taking the time to look after yourself is important to be able to operate at the level needed. 6 new clients signed up to work with us in the last 14 days - a new record for us. There's no way we could have done this 18 months ago. The processes Scott and the team put in place allow us to onboard more clients in a short period of time. Part of the solution is simply having more staff, but we did make a conscious effort to focus around 12 months ago to put a huge amount of focus on how the team is structured and the processes we have in place. That effort has paid dividends. One of the most impactful changes was taking what used to be one person's role and splitting it into three separate roles. This helped us deliver better results for our clients and has removed many of the bottlenecks that exist when we get an influx of new business.

🌟 From Vegetable Seller to Software Developer: My Unconventional Journey 🌟 Hey LinkedIn Fam, I've been reflecting on my journey lately, and I feel compelled to share it with you all. It's been quite the ride, from humble beginnings selling vegetables on the roadside to finding my passion as a software developer. Recently, I faced a tough decision. After being laid off from Tata AIA/Comunus Technologies due to a project windup, I received an offer from ABC organization. While I'm grateful for the opportunity, it came with a lower salary than what I'm used to. It made me pause and reflect deeply. You see, my journey hasn't been traditional. I didn't have a bachelor's degree or fancy certifications. Instead, I learned coding through YouTube tutorials and dove headfirst into the industry, accumulating four years of experience along the way. I've worn many hats in my career - from distributing travel packages outside malls to working as a call center executive, an office boy, and even a security guard. But it was my determination and passion for coding that led me to where I am today. I've worked on some incredible projects, like the full-stack CattleMart App and Sinspire Co's Facebook library ad saver, pushing boundaries and showcasing my skills at every turn. Yet, despite all this, I've encountered interviewers who focus solely on theory and fail to appreciate practical skills and real-world achievements. It's disheartening, to say the least. So when ABC offered me a position with a lower salary, I had to make a tough call. As much as I appreciated the opportunity, accepting it would have meant compromising my morale and doubting my worth. And so, I made the decision to reject it. Not out of arrogance or entitlement, but out of a deep-rooted belief in my skills and self-worth. I share this not to boast, but to inspire others who may be facing similar challenges. Your worth is not determined by a piece of paper or a number on a paycheck. It's about resilience, passion, and unwavering belief in yourself.
