The refranchising of Coca-Cola bottlers continues. The Coca-Cola Company and two of its bottlers ThaiNamThip and Swire Coca-Cola to form a strategic bottling alliance in north ASEAN, including Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia TCCC will divest its minority ownership of ThaiNamthip, while Swire will take a controlling stake in ThaiNamthip’s bottling operations in Thailand and Laos, and ThaiNamthip will receive a minority stake in Swire's operations in Vietnam and Cambodia. The fallout from #Nigeria's business climate continues with #Diageo announcing it will sell 58% of its #Guinness #Nigeria business. The company, which put down roots in 1950, joins an exodus of multinational companies leaving the harsh operating environment. The good news is that the business has been bought by #Singaporean company #Tolaram that already has deep roots in the country. Swings and roundabouts, although the optics of a #disinvestment are never good for a country.

Such a disheartening post, to say the very least. Its one thing to share your opinion on the taste/quality/availability (one is entitled to do so) but to actually bash them on being the alleged benefitors of an ordeal? Did they launch their product in Oct 2023? No. Did they prepare for the 225Mn Pakistani market demand? No. Did they foresee they’ll be forced and be pitted into the same ring as global brands? No. And look at all the comments in which people have come out with all guns blazing - like its some cardinal sin being committed by the brand? If you are prioritising local products, then it’s your own choice. If you don’t have the patience, then pay up those extra PKR 30-40 and go for the international product options. Period. Won’t it be a too much of an ask if I stand here asking a local household electronic manufacturer to compete with Apple’s iPhone? :) Asking a local brand to compete with a 100 yrs old global brand’s pedigree in 9-10 months (and then accusing of them of not doing so) is simply outrageous. Over the years, I’ve borne witness to the cagey mindsets that our local business owners possess. Yet I have also personally known the Mezan Group dynamic owners for a while and seen first-hand the solid infrastructure that they’ve put in place well before this whole demand-supply conundrum started. People who belong to the supply chain or factory operations fraternity would vouch (and clarify if needed) how an unforeseen 1000x surge in demand can’t be instantly resolved with opening another factory? Companies operate on annual business volume projections and monthly inventory targets to put it simply. R&D interventions don’t happen overnight and require strong market research before the operational hassles that come with their implementation. For me, this post actually gives me renewed hope that now Cola Next is now spoken in the same breath as other global brands. Price standardisation and inventory shortage are good problems to have, no? For a local brand that was literally falling behind when it came to market share till this point last year yet retailers are now fighting to get a hold of product as its consumers top choice. You don’t need any more validation; you just need more support to keep going. So for all local brands out there, you all deserve a massive shoutout! And I am adamant you all are making the right investments to bring (or even exceed) the global standards to become export contributors of our country one day. Despite the unassailable supply challenges, I hope you continue in your endeavour.

Food in Malaysia is amazing, it's a combination of many flavors

The local brands are capitalizing on the boycot of lot of foreign products. But they are just minting money and not facilitating their customers. We know that the prices of the brands like Coke, Pepsi, McDonald or KFC are inclusive of very heavy marketing budgets. Whereas the local brands have negligible marketing expense, but their pricing is the same or in case of brands like kababjee fried chicken, the prices are higher than KFC. This is really pathetic.
