📢 C-BEN Member Highlight A recent Inside Higher Ed article penned by Jessica Blake delves into how eight community colleges in California are developing unique programs to aid adult learners in achieving their degrees with greater speed and efficiency. At the heart of these initiatives is the competency-based education (CBE) model, which prioritizes skill-building and mastery over traditional grading systems. Our very own Lisa McIntyre-Hite, Ph.D. describes the CBE model as a “backwards design approach” to teaching and learning, emphasizing the importance of determining the core competencies students need to master and then designing the curriculum accordingly. Today, we're proud to join our partners at the Pathways Alliance in announcing the release of National Guidelines for Apprenticeship Standards for K-12 Teacher Apprenticeships published by the U.S. Department of Labor. Teacher apprenticeships stand to serve communities with the greatest need for well-prepared teachers. As the number of teacher apprenticeship programs grows nationally, these guidelines would not only support programs to expand access and affordability into the teaching profession, but also to uphold a commitment to quality practice opportunities that enable aspiring teachers to hone evidence-based instructional skills—ensuring that they engage all students in rigorous, equitable, and affirming learning. As Zully Sanchez, a graduate of Dallas College's apprenticeships program, shared in her remarks at the U.S. Department of Education and Labor event on educator shortages today: "My experience as an apprentice helped me feel prepared and understand the different tasks and roles teachers play in the classroom and students' life going into my first year of teaching...We were able to learn skills and form lasting relationships within our community." Over the last eight months, the Pathways Alliance (of which DFI is a co-founder) has worked in close partnership with federal, state, and local education and workforce leaders to set these guidelines. Notably, our VP of External Affairs Patrick Steck co-chaired the working group that authored this framework, alongside David Donaldson (National Center for Grow Your Own) and Jacqueline King (American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE)). Social Purpose- Leadership, Governance & Education. Chief Executive Officer at The Smith Family. Board Member
Today I will be attending my daughter Brydie’s graduation from High School. Brydie has made the most of every opportunity she’s had in learning, sport, the arts, and leadership. It has been so good to be part of the education journey of both my daughters, something I’m pleased to be able to continue in my role at The Smith Family where I see young people realise their potential when they have the support they need. That's why I want all young people to have the same opportunities as my daughters. That’s what drives our team, supporters, and partners like The Australian Financial Review who today published our article that outlines our thinking on the future of Careers Education. We see this as an important priority in the National School Reform Agreement and we suggest that ‘our nation needs to totally rethink how we provide Careers Education in schools. We need more investment to scale up programs that are shown to be working. Schools require robust partnerships with employers to enhance students’ learning opportunities and networks. It’s not just about doing new things but also doing the right things, so initiatives must be rigorously tracked for effectiveness.’ As we say in the article, ‘2023’s Year 12 leavers have weathered the storm of COVID and its aftermath. I commend their tenacity. Now begins their next chapter, and my hope is they can all fulfil their potential, enjoy meaningful careers, and go on to live their best lives. When our young people thrive, so too does our nation.’ Read more here- https://shorturl.at/tDM16
