New York City’s least-dense community districts are permitting new housing at lower rates compared to the rest of the city, raising questions for policymakers over how to achieve fair and equitable housing growth across a broad range of neighborhood types, according to a recent report from the NYU Furman Center. Data analyzed by the Furman Center shows that the city’s lowest-density community districts take up 44.7 percent of the total land across the five boroughs but contain just 28.4 percent of the city’s population. What’s more, the research finds that the lowest-density community districts added housing at only half the rate of the city overall between 2010 and 2020. The phenomenon of governments implementing populist policies, often driven by political expediency rather than the genuine needs of communities, is a significant challenge in modern governance. Populist policies are typically designed to appeal to the emotions and immediate concerns of the public to garner support and secure votes. However, they might not necessarily address the core issues or long-term needs of the communities they claim to represent. Politicians often prioritize policies that resonate with public sentiment in order to secure or maintain their positions in power. These policies might offer quick fixes or immediate benefits that appeal to voters during election cycles. Populist policies tend to focus on short-term gains that might provide immediate relief or gratification but often lack sustainable solutions for enduring issues within communities. The effects of this syndrome is resource misallocation. Funds and resources might be allocated to initiatives that serve political goals rather than being directed towards critical community needs like infrastructure, education, healthcare, or employment opportunities. Another visible effect is policy instability. Populist policies can lead to erratic policy changes as they are often driven by political cycles rather than long-term planning. This inconsistency can hinder progress and disrupt community development efforts.

Whether it’s community economic development or the development of individual enterprises and industries, success is a function of six broad categories. Regional Strategic, Ltd. occupies two slices of the pie: Foundation and Position. Some people think of them as the “Due diligence” functions of successful development. · Can your target generate enough spend? · Can your location generate enough traffic? · Are the workforce, infrastructure, and environment suitable? · Will cash-flow and profit justify financing? · Will success drive sufficient community expenditures to justify support? Regional Strategic, Ltd. can help with all of these or fill in the gaps where you need support. #economicdevelopment #communitydevelopment #ruraldevelopment #businessplanning #economicimpactanalysis #marketresearch

It’s Local Government Week, and the Conversation Co team recommends a valuable resource that provides essential insights into both the present state and future trajectory of the local government sector. 🏛️ A recent nationwide survey by ACU researchers reveals a distinct generational and gender gap in Australians' perceptions of the role of local government. Interestingly, most respondents believe that councils should extend their focus beyond the traditional 'Three Rs' – Roads, Rates, and Rubbish – to prioritise future planning, health, and community development. 🔗 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dv_kKyaW #ConversationCo #ConversationCaravan #LocalGovernment #BusinessResources
