📣 Professors and researchers from the University of Coimbra and CNC-UC, Euclides Pires and Carlos Faro, were honored by Cantanhede Municiplity for their work in the municipality over the last few years. 🔬 Helena Teodósio, the mayor, singled out Euclides Pires for his "invaluable contribution to the development and consolidation of Biocant Park as a leading science and technology ecosystem", highlighting the important positions he has held, as director of the Molecular Biotechnology Unit and director of Biocant - Technology Transfer Association, where he currently chairs the General Assembly. 🧬 Carlos Faro "played a crucial role in the conception and strategic definition of Biocant Park, of which he was the first CEO, as well as having had a decisive influence on the creation of UC-Biotech and several promising start-ups in the Life Sciences area", according to the mayor. 📣 From July 25 to August 4, CNC-UC was present at the University of Coimbra Science Workshop, held in the Education Space of #Expofacic2024, with various hands-on science activities. 🔬 On the first day, visitors were welcomed with the activity "Labyrinth of the spinal cord", followed by "Mitochondria: our energy plants" on July 27, and the games "Is sleep a waste of time?" and "Superbacteria: an invisible threat" on July 29. 👩🔬This science communication initiative aims to educate and awaken the community's interest in scientific research. 📣 The ERA Chair GCure - From Gene to Cure, coordinated by Luís Pereira de Almeida, president of the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC-UC), coordinator of the Center for Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CiBB) and professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy (FFUC), will receive 2.5 million euros. 👏 👏 GCure represents a strategic effort to strengthen Universidade de Coimbra capacity and visibility at the forefront of research and innovation in gene therapy, a scientific field that results in the generation of medicines using genetic material (DNA or RNA) to treat or prevent the causes of diseases. It is also expected to contribute to significant advances in health and well-being. The ERA Chair Holder will be Professor Jude Samulski, from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, considered one of the fathers of gene therapy.
