Today in our weekly Luminary newsletter, I shared a note about the assault on the Fearless Fund and their fight to keep their grant program for black women-owned businesses, many of whom are part of the Luminary community. Whether you’re on an entrepreneurial path or not, it’s crucial to recognize and support initiatives that aim to dismantle systemic barriers faced by underrepresented founders.  As we celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth, we must equally shine a light on the continued challenges faced, including the current litigation against our friends at Fearless Fund. The outcome of this court case could not only jeopardize their ability to continue to do its important work for underrepresented women founders, but it could also impact any organization with DEI at its core, like Luminary.   The Fearless Fund, founded by Ayana Parsons and Arian Simone, is a venture capital fund dedicated to investing in women of color-led businesses. Their mission is not just about financial investment, but also about providing mentorship, resources, and a supportive network to help these entrepreneurs thrive. The Fearless Foundation, an associated organization, extends this mission by focusing on advocacy, education, and empowerment. Through various programs and initiatives, they aim to address the systemic issues that hinder the progress of underrepresented entrepreneurs.   Several news articles and interviews have been published recently, shedding light on this court case's details and challenges. I've included one below from early February with Arian Simone and a few more links in the comments. I urge you to take a moment to watch and to understand the gravity of the situation and the potential impact it could have collectively on our efforts. Further I ask you to share and spread awareness about this case (and there are others including with our friends at Hello Alice with Carolyn Rodz and Elizabeth Gore). Together, we can create a future where entrepreneurship is truly accessible to all, regardless of race, gender, or background. Let's stand fearlessly in support of equity and justice in entrepreneurship. We stand with you, Fearless Fund. #racialequity #diversityequityinclusion #equityandinclusion #blackwomeninbusiness #community #fearlessfund #blackentrepreneurship # https://lnkd.in/eRGYNyi4

The drama that this organization has endured while Arian Simone has demonstrated such poise and grace, is so admirable. The audacity they have to tell a VC how to direct their mission driven monies is crazy! No other VC would be told what to do or even challenged. Thank you for uplifting this Cate.

Hey Cate, if you're ever interested in chatting about DEI and what that means to you at Luminary, let me know!

I am so happy to see this because from the minute I heard about the court case I was flabbergasted. Like most people I didn't think the case had any merit whatsoever and I didn't see it going any where. I honestly thought it would be tossed out of court. However, when they were able to successfully stop the grant from closing or being awarded, I began to worry. I work with "non-employer" microenterprise owners, the majority of whom are individuals who identify as (b)Black/ African American women, in economically distressed and under-resourced areas by providing capacity building and technical support. The idea is to increase their likelihood of gaining access to much needed capital to grow their business, create jobs and stimulate investment in their communities. Who would have ever thought initiatives aimed at dismantling systemic barriers faced by underrepresented people could be used to argue discrimination. I have been following the case since August - September 2023 and I just don't feel like enough people are talking about this, so I am very glad you are amplifying their story. ❤️

The fight to reclaim the small percentage of support that marginalized groups receive is sickening. I am not afraid of what can happen if they lose this case, but more afraid of what new tactic will arise to destroy small owned businesses owned by Black women and others who support them. It never ends and that’s the saddest part of it all.

Well said Cate Luzio! I've also been thinking about this case and the battle Arian Simone is fighting. and the legal precedent this case will set. As if raising capital for women and underrepresented founders wasn't already hard enough. We have to continue to shine a light on the incredible work funds like the Fearless Fund and organizations like Luminary and Hello Alice are doing to advance opportunities for women.

Thank you Cate Luzio for reminding us, especially during this month, about the Fearless Fund suit and aptly put "assault". And you're so right, what other entrepreneur funds and organizations with DEI at their core will be impacted if this suit is successful?
