Everyone is asking about my 2024 - here you go! Happy New Year! It's been a crazy year since the fall of 2022. A few of you wondered why I haven't been posting regularly. Truth is that I got tired of trying to find  the right new job after my lay-off. So I changed my strategy and started a consulting  business to match my passion - PILATES, FITNESS, and WELLNESS. For the past few  months I’ve been hard at  work getting Positive Transformation Consulting, LLC up and running.  With that, I’ve had the chance to get to work with small businesses and even big multi-unit enterprises.    Here's the deal, this is a passion project and am committed to supporting the Pilates and Wellness studio world while doing my part to protect and expand the legacy of Joseph Pilates. In this month's issue, we celebrate World Pilates Day and the unifying effect and wellness benefits our method brings. On the front cover, we draw our communities' attention to the importance of size inclusivity with Lindsey Leaf from @fatbodypilates. She shares what more we all could be doing in this space in every studio where we work. This article acts as a call to action for the Pilates industry to prioritise inclusivity, embrace diversity and promote acceptance across all studios to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all types of clients. It’s an important issue that’s silently impacting quite a few Pilates clients and likely potential clients who don’t feel comfortable and so never make it to a studio. We’re doing the Pilates community a disservice, if we don’t acknowledge the issue and address it. We connect many people in the industry at The Pilates Journal and these concerns about inclusivity run deep. If our industry is going to evolve and grow we need to take this seriously, empower these clients and treat them no differently. Thank you to Lindsey for sharing her story with us. It might not be the innovation you thought Pilates needs! But the opinion is solid. Pilates was born in an era where the disease of modern lifestyle was starting to hit. In the intro pages of his book, "Return to Life Through Contrology," he outlines a wellness strategy. It was 1945, he was light years ahead of his time, addressing proper nutrition, movement, sun exposure, and the physiological and mental detoxifying effects of physical exercise. So innovating in Pilates has nothing to do with tech, lights, and more reformers. Fear is a powerful feeling that can stop us from doing a lot. It also stops us from experiencing a lot I get that being cautious serve a purpose, it does, especially around Lions or Sharks. But at a Clinical Pilates Studio you needn’t fear any of the following: * Getting “hurt” or “injured” (There’s simply not enough force to damage you if you are listening to the instructions correctly) * Not being able to do the exercises (Your knowledgeable instructor will guide you through exercises for the stage you are at) * Not fitting in (Your studio should be a place that is welcoming & supportive) * Re injuring and injury old or new (Your Clinical Pilates Instructor is equipped to help you work though all sorts of different issues that affect our bodies) * Not being the right “age” (Clinical Pilates is suitable for all ages of people from teens through to older adults) * Being in a room full of Lions or Sharks So don’t let fear stop you from doing something that could give your life a whole lot more than just a couple of hours of exercise per week. I was teaching one of my in house Pilates classes a few days ago and it got me thinking about the type of people I look after..  Young teenagers, older adults, sports enthusiasts, mums, people who work in offices, people who work the land and just about everyone in between, this put a huge smile on my face, it is a mixed bag, and that's what I love about it. Everyone is welcome and more importantly, everyone feels welcome! The positive impact of having Pilates in your life crosses all kinds of barriers, because everybody needs to be strong, fit, capable, balanced, cognitively sound, aware of their core, posture and wellbeing, and Pilates addresses all of these things. This is not specific to a group of people, this is useful to every person alive! When you feel strong and capable, you make more positive life decisions, you maintain a better mood and you are a better version of yourself, this can only have a positive impact on your life trajectory and the direction of others around you. Joseph Pilates, the creator of the method famously said... “We retire too early and we die too young. Our prime of life should be in the 70’s and old age should not come until we are almost 100.” What I believe he meant by this, is the longer we live, the more opportunities we have to improve our health and wellbeing. I am on the same side of this argument, don't be idle, use your body and be grateful for the opportunity to be able to move your body and keep your body strong!
