I was watching the AWS re:Invent 2023 keynote by Dr. Werner Vogels, Amazon VP and CTO, and to my surprise - instead of announcing the usual technical innovations and service launches - he asked the audience to take out their notepads and start writing down the principal practices of The Frugal Architect, focusing over half of his presentation on cost control. I love the idea of every business unit in a company having a cost champion and taking direct interest in the AWS costs of their products. In the past it has not been too easy and cost visibility has usually been solved by 3rd party FinOps tools that take a percentage of your cloud bill, but AWS is starting to launch tools that enhance this visibility natively. They have now added a feature to the Console that is called myApplications - allowing to tag resources by application and make their associated costs easily consumable by the business leaders. When properly integrated with AWS Identity Center and your own IdP, it could provide a great visibility portal for any organization. On a more controversial note, Dr. Vogels also said that if you are striving for sustainability, you should program in Rust. That is likely to ruffle some feathers :)
