📈 New data on container glass collection for recycling in Europe is now available! The EU’s glass value chain sustains a steady 80.2% glass packaging collection rate with record volume of collected glass 💪 💬 “More glass packaging was collected in 2022 than ever before, reaching a record level of 12.4 million tonnes, representing an increase of about 542 000 tonnes over the previous year. The increase in volumes of collected glass demonstrates the resilience and commitment of the glass packaging value chain to increase the availability of post-consumer glass for the manufacturing of new glass bottles and jars," says Adeline Farrelly, Secretary General of FEVE – the European Container Glass Federation on behalf of Close the Glass Loop partners. 🔗 To access the complete press release and detailed figures, please visit our website at: https://lnkd.in/gmzy7HAZ #ClosetheGlassLoop #CircularEconomy #GlassPackaging #GlassRecycling #PavingTheWayTo90

♻️ What do key industry stakeholders have to say about glass return and refill schemes in the UK? Our researchers worked with senior representatives from the glass container manufacture and distribution industries to assess their perceptions of the advantages and potential problems of large-scale return and refill schemes. Participants indicated that although such schemes are useful in particular circumstances, they would prefer more significant investment in improving recycling practices: this was seen as a faster, cheaper and more sustainable way forward. Circular Economy Coalition - CERC, together with the European Association Close The Glass Loop, organizes the European conference "Towards The Closed Glass Loop Action Plan in Romania". The debate will analyze the impact of the new European and national legislative measures regarding post-consumer glass packaging, together with representatives of the local and European glass packaging recycling and production industry, of the central and local authorities in Romania, as well as the other relevant actors (retailers, bottlers, producer responsibility implementation organizations). The objective of the debate is to outline an action plan to ensure a 90% glass waste collection rate for recycling by 2030. #glass #closetheloop #glassrecycling #circulareconomy

The ongoing debate between glass and plastic containers in the world of packaging revolves around their environmental impact. Both materials have pros and cons, and the choice between them affects the environment, product quality, and consumer preferences. Glass is often seen as more eco-friendly due to its indefinite recyclability, but its production requires significant energy and natural resources. Plastic has a lower energy requirement for manufacturing, but its limited recycling potential and improper disposal can lead to environmental harm. Both materials present unique challenges, and informed choices can be made by considering factors like recycling rates, manufacturing processes, and alternative packaging materials. https://lnkd.in/gEwwTdry

This month, GRC is highlighting the importance of Georgia's robust recycling industry to our state's economy and environment. As the largest glass recycler in North America, Strategic Materials, Inc., continues to increase the recovery of glass in Georgia and across the US. In 2023, SMI expanded its glass collection program into Georgia. Currently, there are 20 new Ripple Glass drop-off bins located across the Atlanta metro area with more collection sites coming in 2024. SMI recycles an impressive 10,000 tons of glass per month in Georgia and has been processing glass in our state for more than 30 years. In addition to employing 47 people in Georgia, Strategic Materials further supports Georgia's economy by providing recycled glass as a feedstock to other Georgia manufacturers. For example, SMI sends some of its recycled glass to the Owens Corning plant in Fairburn, where it is ultimately made into new fiberglass insulation. Recycled glass is also sent to local manufacturers to make new glass bottles. Each time you recycle a bottle, you support jobs, our economy, and provide feedstocks to Georgia companies that rely on your bottles to make their products. It is just one more reason to recycle more in '24! Recycle. Our businesses depend on it. #recyclemorein24 #recyclerightga #thetruerealrecycling
