I absolutely agree with your perspective on this critical issue. It's indeed puzzling why palliative care at the end of life in Australia often leans towards aggressive treatments, especially when there are more person-centred approaches available. Our healthcare systems need to pivot towards supporting individuals in more comfortable and familiar settings, like residential aged care facilities or their own homes. With the significant strides we've made in healthcare technology, there's no doubt that we can enhance the quality of life for these individuals right in the comfort of their homes. Telehealth services, remote monitoring systems, and customised healthcare apps have delivered top-notch medical care without hospitalisation. This not only preserves the dignity and comfort of patients but also eases the strain on our healthcare system. Expanding hospice care is another avenue worth exploring. The idea of establishing hospice centres in tranquil locations, with a primary focus on spirituality, could significantly transform end-of-life care. In these serene environments, individuals could be surrounded by natural beauty and quiet, which can profoundly impact their spiritual and emotional well-being. Managing pain and other symptoms remains crucial, but integrating this with a solid spiritual focus can provide a more holistic approach to palliative care. These hospices would offer a peaceful retreat where patients and their families can find comfort, support, and a sense of peace during this challenging time. Incorporating aspects of nature, meditation spaces, and facilities for spiritual guidance, these hospices could become sanctuaries for those in their final stages of life. This approach not only addresses the physical needs of the patients but also profoundly supports their emotional and spiritual journeys. It's a compassionate way to honour the entirety of their experience, ensuring that their final days are as peaceful and meaningful as possible. Ultimately, it's about respecting the wishes and needs of individuals at the end of their lives. By integrating the latest advancements in healthcare technology and embracing a more holistic, spiritually-inclined approach to hospice care, we can transform our approach to palliative care, making it more humane, compassionate, and person-centred.
Why is Palliative Care at End of Life so Aggressive in Australia? We really need to become more Person Centered in our care and not feel the need to hospitalise these individuals. Our systems should allow for care in the Residential Aged Care setting or Home. Maybe we need to consider a increase in hospices also as an alternative to these Medical Palliative Care settings.... #palliativecare #endoflifecare #patientcenteredcare #dignity #respect #choice #control #deathanddying
