Bama Athreya, USAID's Deputy Assistant Administrator in the Bureau for Inclusive Growth, Partnerships, and Innovation, spent COP28 talking with young people about their views on the climate crisis. She came away from the conference with three ways to support youth in the climate space: 1) Ensure young people a seat at the table in policymaking. 2) Move more climate financing for youth-led organizations. 3) Invest more in relevant education, capacity building, and skills. In this open letter, Kennedy Mugochi - Hivos' Regional Director in #EastAfrica, spells out what African leaders should push for at #cop28. His first point? Uphold the interests of African Peoples and.... ➡️ Ensure that African resources and initiatives are not captured or diverted to meet the interests of foreign market actors. ➡️ Support the call for greater resources and policy space to be devoted to locally-led, community-driven climate action, which is often more effective and less costly than top-down initiatives. ➡️ Endorse the Eight Principles for Locally Led Adaptation. Find out more about Kennedy's second (equitable #energytransition) and third (transform #climatefinance) points here ⬇️

Our event at COP28 brings together policymakers and actors from civil society to share experiences on the implications on the ground. In May 2024, Environmental Peacebuilding published a paper, titled "Conflict mitigation as a means of climate change adaptation: Lessons for policy and development practice". This work studies the way in which #conflict exacerbates #climatechange vulnerability by "negatively altering, among others, local poverty rates and market functions, political inclusion, gender equity, and social cohesion". Even though there have been achievements on the financial side during #COP28, political, physical, and even temporal barriers still hinder #adaptation in conflict-affected settings. Conflict mitigation is often essential for climate change adaptation or resilient outcomes in fragile settings. Read the full paper by Daniel Abrahams, PhD and Kayly Ober, which provides detailed insights into the topic. https://lnkd.in/dANDTYwS

The 2023 edition of Africa Day at COP28 was held under the theme: “Scaling up Financing for Climate Action and Green Growth in Africa” which aims to amplify Africa’s voice at the COPs and to provide the space and platform to highlight Africa’s challenges, opportunities and responses to Climate Change. During those discussions and action plans were developed, will they be implemented or is it another talk show of our head of States? How will African leaders ensure that there are policies and funds in place to protect our farmers especially our female farmers against climate change impacts? What about our school systems , will there be lessons in our STEM school curriculum on Climate change in the form of projects or climate change challenges to promote green growth and climate smart agriculture? #climatechange #climateaction #greenfuture #climatejustice #greenenergy #cop28 #cop28uae #africacop28 https://lnkd.in/ebfg4t_5
