On World Environment Day, six new cities stretching from Africa to Latin America joined UNEP’s Generation Restoration Cities. Collectively, these urban areas – representing 45 million inhabitants, 2.1 million hectares of land and 600 kilometres of waterways – are now seeking to replicate and scale up ecosystem restoration initiatives using nature-based solutions. Championing the 2030 Agenda to move the world onto a sustainable and resilient path and joining forces to protect people and planet, World Environment Day 2024 builds momentum for climate action by rallying support for vital ecosystems restoration work. https://lnkd.in/d6xgwYbd #WorldEnvironmentDay #Restoration

🌊 Thematic Thursday: #Oceans. 🐟🐚What are #marine protected areas (#MPAs), and how do they benefit both #ecosystems and people? 💧 MPAs can contribute to #climate #adaptation but require further study to minimise the risk of opting for convenient #solutions which have not been fully assessed. 🌏 Global area-based #conservation targets can lead to a ‘race’ to designate protected areas – even in places with relatively low significance for #biodiversity! ⬇️ Click the link to learn more about #social and #ecological impacts of MPAs, and why local #community involvement is essential to their design and #management. With funding support from Environment and Climate Change Canada, Nanwakolas will be supporting research into kelp restoration methodologies, compilation of new and existing knowledge on Indigenous and Western science regarding kelp restoration, work to establish a baseline of kelp carbon sequestration, and work to restore kelp forests. This project will also build community capacity through training activities and work to provide climate change mitigation benefits through enhanced carbon sequestration, as well as co-benefits to the community. https://lnkd.in/g8vZ_Upm

CITY FUTURES - Europe's Nature-Based Solutions Did you know that 91% of Europe's cities are using nature-based solutions to mitigate and adapt to climate crisis? The European Environment Agency (EEA) surveyed over 19,000 climate actions being taken and their new report found that almost all the cities were applying nature-based solutions, including: ✅ Facilitating natural water retention ✅ Maintaining parks ✅ Urban forests ✅ Green roofs This is vital given that Europe is the fastest warming continent with temperatures rising at roughly twice the rate of the global average. https://lnkd.in/gsuUHzzQ To learn more about "City Futures" explore Module 1 of Global Socio-Cultural Futures (Online Course). https://lnkd.in/g6YwjH3a Jennifer Gidley PhD Global Futures Education https://lnkd.in/gt4GPR5p

Researchers are proposing a new global advisory system to address the alarming impacts of urban expansion. With cities growing at an unprecedented rate, putting overwhelming pressures on exploited land, scarce resources, and fragile ecosystems, the new system, they say, would fulfil a similar function as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) does for climate change. https://lnkd.in/dK6qAfYA
