Environment, population, & development in East Asia. I research, write & teach about these and more.
When the worst impacts of climate change and ecological collapse are yet to be felt, how will future generations look back on our failure to act in time? What will younger people who are alive right now say about how our leaders dealt with the emerging crisis? The story of space shuttle Columbia’s final journey and burn up on re-entry, why NASA failed to heed the warnings of previous foam strikes on the fleet, and how they discussed and rejected various measures to identify and deal with the crisis they faced, has enormous resonance for me, as our generation fails in its most urgent tasks. This was three hours of gripping TV. Sensitive and never sensationalist, the mini-docuseries described with original film and interviews with NASA officials and families of the crew, the organisational obstacles within NASA to dealing with a known problem, and which resulted in the deaths of seven amazing, dearly loved and admired people. I came away thinking that, since then we haven’t really learnt that much, and may even have regressed in our ability to deal with catastrophic events as they unfold. 69% of Earth’s wildlife has been wiped out in the half-century since 1970 – less than a blink of an eye in historical time. Greenhouse gas concentrations are up by a third since the 1960s. This year we see a documented rise in average surface temperatures globally of about 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. Yet so little is being done. Research published in Nature (linked below) shows overwhelming public support for more action on climate change. Yet people systematically underestimate the willingness of their fellow citizens to act. Leaders pick up on these fears and suspicions and feed off of them. We need to tell each other that we want action, instead of allowing the cynics and opportunists to isolate and divide us so they can take advantage of our fears. We know what the problems are. We already have the tools to deal with them. Why don’t our governments get together and actually do it?

#sustainability #NobelPrize Peter Imanuelsen “Sweden”, a Swedish journalist is asking on X (https://lnkd.in/ekbDRP8J): Question. Do you think Global Communism is a bigger threat than Global warming? The days of communism are gone. China is leading the world to nationalistic bureaucratic socialism. There has to be significant economic turmoil to get to either Chinese global socialism or fixing the current unhinged capitalism. If you want a world of global nationalistic bureaucratic socialism of the Chinese type, already underway everywhere versus a minority far right wing cultural socialists sympathizing with the Nazis like Trump, Viktor Orban in Hungary, German, French, British, Swedish, Russian, Indian far right Narendra Modi already in power but moderated in the last election by Indian socialists, and Xi Jinping’s Chinese nationalists Socialism of Barack Obama and Kamala Harris is unaffordable. Governments are already in deep debt. There could be a world war to end the far right wing. If you want to undo Clintonomics and its wealthy at World Economic Forum, corporate governance must be reformed and exponential technologies must bring down prices, not raise them, to get to global #sustainability and reduce cost of government by pushing it back into what it is meant for, without overreach. This is what I do. This will also end poverty, war, and climate problems. Meeting Paris Agreement 2015 1.5 degrees Celsius goal of rise in global temperature above pre-industrial times is not difficult at all. But there is enormous resistance from status quo elites on both sides, socialists and the far right of the world, to what I do in preference for a world war. Do you want? 1. A world war between the socialists and the far right of the world, meaning Obama et al v. Trump et al Or 2. Me Peace is love and war is hate. This is a fact and you can do intellectual gymnastics all you want but will always end up with the same result. "The future is knocking at our door right now. Make no mistake, the next generation will ask us one of two questions. Either they will ask: 'What were you thinking; why didn’t you act?' Or they will ask instead: 'How did you find the moral courage to rise and successfully resolve a crisis that so many said was impossible to solve?'” – Peace laureate Al Gore Gore shared the Nobel Peace Prize 2007 with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change." We are facing a multidimensional crisis at the moment, but I will make it easy for you. You will see it's not that complicated. It's only about: - small commitment, - consistency, - and taking one step at a time. I see some people in my network who already operated a change to work in organizations aligning with their values. And I thank them for that. I think that's beautiful. I encourage them with all my heart to move further and let themselves drift if their heart is calling them to action. Now, there are some false beliefs stating: - that change is too complicated, - that we cannot do anything about anything, - that it's out of our power. Thit. And that. And that again. But the truth is, thinking that, you cannot be further away from the truth than ever. Really. Right there you are giving your power to feeling bad about our situation, and the real reality that's so real... instead of feeling better about moving the needle in the better direction: like a tiny act of kindness or care. You have power. Power of tiny changes. For tiny massive changes. Yes. You do. Trust. No more thit or that. We go tiny now. Tiny all the time. Look at my hashtag #LetsGrowTogether. I was thinking that change was hard to make and I still pushed because I knew it was the right thing to do. Now the hashtag has become the way to go on LinkedIn to find more connection, unity, a sense of togetherness and collaboration. You find it on Medium for major publication, or as go to growth hack strategy. Even further I suppose. Then why did I spread that hashtag? Because I knew that we can't do it alone, that it takes the whole of us to make it happen. It takes: - You, - And me. - And others you. One step at a time. So if you feel unhappy at work, and if you know that it's not what this world needs... 🎁 Here is the plan. 🕊 Instead of: - scrolling mindlessly, - binge watching a TV show, - playing video games, - lingering in your darkest thoughts while commuting... You have two options, two power moves: ⚡️ 1 — You take care of yourself instead. Watch stuff that truly uplifts your soul, your sense of self, nurture what you value, and believe in. 2 — Like some Startup (not Stalk Yourself), you prepare your exit. You seek what to do next. It can take time, but explore. See what's possible. Learn. Nurture your vision, and get to it a little, every single day. 15 or 30 min is all it needs. — Regain your power. Claim it. And embrace your life as it should be. ✋🏽 Talk more about what you want for this world. 🗣 Talk more about what you need for this world. 🎙 Talk more about what you love. I believe that it's how we change our world and save it. We all want this. Right? Thank you anyway, anyhow. Remember, You are love, And therefore loved. 💛 Together we care better, better, and better. ☀️ 🕊 #LetsCareTogether #RegenerativeLeadership #RegenerativeCareer #PlanetaryCrisis #ChangeStrategy #InnovationCulture

🌍☂️Cooling Earth from Space: The Giant Umbrella Initiative 🚀 Just read a BBC article and in The New York Times about a space umbrella to cool Earth. Sounds like sci-fi, but it's real science! With support from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration to the EU, it's a bold step against global warming. 🤷♂️ But, it makes you think: should we also focus more on Earth's solutions? 🌍❓ Indeed, while such technological advancements offer promising temporary relief 🛠️🌤️, it's crucial to consider the broader picture 🌏🔍. Perhaps instead of intervening more in the natural balance 🍃⚖️, we should find solutions by stopping some of our actions and behaviors 🚫👣 that contribute to climate change. Addressing the root causes through sustainable living 🏡♻️, reducing carbon footprints 👣🔽, and shifting towards renewable energy sources 🌞💨 might offer a more enduring solution to the planet's climate crisis 🌍❤️🆘. 📎 Links to articles in the comments below! 📰 The screenshot showcases an article from yesterday's LaVanguardia, discussing a fascinating alternative project by Israeli scientists 🔬. They've calculated a specific point between Earth and the Sun, where gravity is nullified, named Lagrange1 or L1 🌍☀️. At this point, the umbrella could be 'floating' in space 🛰️. Truly intriguing! #ClimateInnovation #Sustainability #globalwarming #space #science

Ten years ago, Sweden launched a national innovation program called Viable Cities, inspired by NASA's mission to the moon. The program aims to make the 23 largest cities in the country climate-neutral by 2030. Viable Cities takes a mission-oriented approach to unite people from all levels of society to create livable, lovable, and viable cities. It's about achieving zero emissions and improving the urban environment. The program has been very successful, attracting global attention, with other cities worldwide looking to Sweden for inspiration. This will be possible through a proactive government, engaged citizens, and applying green technologies. Sweden and the EU can learn much from the US in running ambitious mission-oriented programs for global impact. The message is clear: let's work together and pioneer the possible through collaboration and innovation. #sustainability #innovation #zeroemissions #sweden #california

When Climate change is the topic that has most relevance for you then you start to see it everywhere. Even in a novel based on the International Space Station (ISS). I have just finished reading Orbital by Samantha Harvey which is a short novel shortlisted for this year’s Booker Prize, documenting 24 hours of life for the crew of the ISS as imagined by the author. As they circumnavigate the globe 16 times in one day they are invited to bear witness to a huge typhoon hitting the South Pacific and as one of the astronauts has visited there and befriended a local fisherman he tries to imagine the trauma of being down on earth and facing the devastation that he can see from above. The book is such a brilliant description of these episodes that it is hard to believe that the author hasn’t experienced it first hand herself. However, it prompted me to take down another book off my shelves that reproduces many photographs taken by a real astronaut on the ISS. Flicking through it I was struck by the number of images that pick up on clues of the destruction being wrought down on earth at the hand of mankind. Whether it was the huge deposits of soil in a river delta caused by a combination of heavy rains and mass deforestations, or images of dried up lakes and rivers thanks to man made dams or climate change. From space it is quite easy to see how much detrimental impact man is having on the planet he calls home. And yet suggest to most humans that this might be leading to a rapidly-approaching end-game that could spell the end of our species and they think you are talking alarmist nonsense. To many, the ability of people to put some of our number up in space observing us is demonstration of our ingenuity and inventiveness that surely means we will avoid the worst case scenarios predicted by climate scientists. And yet in one passage in the book the author puts our existence in to context by looking at the presence of humans in the timeframe of the universe. If the Big Bang and creation of everything we see in space was zero hour on January first, humans have only appeared in the last hours before midnight on New Year’s eve and industrialisation in the last second! Given how brief a time we have been around, what on earth (forgive the pun) makes us think we will be around more than a few seconds and not fall victim to the next mass extinction (we have already had five on earth , each one killing all large life-forms at the time), this time caused by our own actions? Perhaps we all need to put ourselves in an astronauts shoes to better understand how delicate our environment is and how urgently we need to act to halt its decline? Whatever conclusions you draw from reading it, this is a great book, I thoroughly recommend it. https://lnkd.in/erYAcCQd #MassExtinction #SustainableLife #Anthropocene
