CEO, World Ocean Council - The Global Blue Economy Business & Investment Organization - advancing "Corporate Ocean Responsibility"
RADICALLY SCALING UP OCEAN, WEATHER AND CLIMATE DATA Harnessing the role of the private sector is the only means to significantly, rapidly and cost effectively expand ocean, weather and climate information. WORKSHOP: 9 April 2024, 15:00-16:30, Barcelona “Science/Industry Partnerships for Data Collection and Sharing (SMART Ocean – SMART Industries)” UN Ocean Decade Conference Satellite Event Organized by World Ocean Council Advancing use of the 100,000 merchant ships, 3-4 million fishing boats, 1.2 million km of submarine cable etc. is the mission of the World Ocean Council (WOC) SMART Ocean – SMART Industries (SO-SI) programme. https://lnkd.in/gE3eD7vS This WOC invitation-only workshop focused on identifying actionable priorities for scaling up industry participation in the collection of ocean, weather and climate data. The workshop will begin with a case study panel on industry/science collaboration, followed by a moderated forum to understand and address: • What does “success” look like for industry involvement in voluntary data collection? • What are some of the best practices to date? • What are the barriers to success? • What can the WOC SO-SI programme do to best scale up success and address the barriers to success? You do not have to be an approved UN Ocean Decade Conference participant to join the workshop, but we do require that interested parties apply to participate, as space is limited. I'm loving the #EarthWeek events at SF Climate Week, its been a great reminder of just how awesome and energetic and creative this community is. I’m also delighted to be joining one of the panel events, "AI Applications for Climate & Energy Solutions" on Thursday, alongside speakers from Anthropic, Energy and Environmental Economics, Inc., and Boomitra. The panel will cover the following topics: - What are some of the most promising AI applications right now in climate tech, energy, and #sustainability? - How does AI negatively impact climate? - How can we use AI/ML technologies to create solutions that address climate challenges? (e.g. #grid load solutions, #battery/charging, #EV/transportation, #solar, #electrification, #circulareconomy applications, etc.) - What are the technology gaps and opportunities that address climate risk, energy production, consumption, regulation, and more? Big stuff, hard topics, exciting times! #SFCW https://lu.ma/PresenceSFCW

Earth observation (EO) has the potential to drive $3.8 Trillion in Economic Growth by 2030, while eliminating 2Gt of GHG emissions annually. For reference, that's almost twice the yearly combined emissions of all the cars in the EU today. I am thrilled to announce my contribution to a new #WEF report highlighting the immense value Earth observation data could bring to the global economy if it was used at scale! This novel analysis also identified 6 key industries that stand to benefit the most from EO, along with 5 strategies to activate its full potential. Read the full report here ▶ https://lnkd.in/e6Nbfqtk Also check out this related blog from Bridget Fawcett, Brett Loubert and Helen Elizabeth Burdett ▶ https://lnkd.in/efF6Q4QN Congratulations to fellow contributors Arthur Anglin, Joseph Couture, Sarah Horn, Brett Loubert, Helen Elizabeth Burdett, Nikolai Khlystov, Kelly Heaton, Liesda Marsdon!

Many people outside Europe haven't heard of the Destination Earth digital twin project. The project seeks to improve our ability to monitor, model, and manage Europe's environmental and societal challenges stemming from climate change. Well worth a look, and you can sign up and explore the different services they're enabling, and interact with many of the data sets and models that feed the twin. Really good example of building in public and thinking through interoperability and collaboration. #digitaltwin #esg #simulation

This is fascinating. Peatlands absorb more carbon than the planet's forests and store 30% of total soil carbon. In this Esri & The Science of Where podcast Mauro Lourenço, PhD, research scientist for the Wild Bird Trust, joins me to discuss the potential of peatlands to fight #climate change. https://lnkd.in/gjUgFqpX
