At the end of this year’s #climateweek we are sharing Kristina Varaksina's powerful photograph "The Seashore is No Longer Here," winner of the Photography4Humanity Prize 2023. Taken in Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan, shows schoolgirls standing in an abandoned seaport town. Next to them, an installation marks where the Aral Sea's shoreline once reached – a reminder of what's been lost to environmental change. Once the world's fourth-largest lake, the Aral Sea has lost 90% of its volume since the 1960s due to water diversion for agriculture. Varaksina's photograph doesn't just document this ecological disaster – it captures its human cost, forcing us to confront the legacy we're leaving for future generations.
