Is the Paris Olympics Winning the Race Against the Climate Clock? 🌍🏅 As the Olympic flame lights up in Paris tomorrow, the world turns its eyes to what promises to be a climate-conscious edition of the games. The 2024 Paris Olympics have set ambitious goals to reduce the carbon footprint and pave the way for future sustainable mega-events. Yet, as the latest report from Carbon Market Watch and éclaircies titled "Going for Green" reveals, there's still a long way to go. Key Insights from the Report: - The plans, if fully implemented, would cover only 30% of the expected carbon emissions. - Major emissions stem from unavoidable sectors like construction and transportation, particularly air travel, which poses a significant challenge under the current event format. - The report praises the shift away from misleading 'carbon neutrality' claims towards more transparent communication. The Call for a Fundamental Rethink: To truly align with the 1.5°C goal set by the Paris Agreement, a drastic rethinking of the Olympic model is necessary. Proposed changes include decentralizing the events across multiple countries to reduce travel emissions and expanding in-person attendance by utilizing more local audiences. Towards a Greener Future: The report suggests that ending partnerships with sponsors not aligned with green policies is a crucial next step. This approach not only reduces direct emissions but also combats the indirect impact of promoting products by major polluters. As the Paris Olympics kick off, they mark not just a celebration of global athleticism but also a test of our commitment to the planet. The real victory will be in creating a sustainable model that does not just aim for gold in sports but also in environmental responsibility. -88 days to Paris 2024... are you ready Julien ACHARD ☆ CertICM Christian CAZENOVE Philippe HENRY Alexandre Arnoux Florent Bardy? https://lnkd.in/dnmwX8Dj #ParisOlympics2024 #Sustainability #ClimateAction #GoingForGreen #OlympicGames

As a practitioner and advocate of sustainable spectator travel for major sports events it’s heartening to see International Olympic Committee – IOC recognising good practice here. But with some major sports events on the edge of extinction due to rising costs is there a danger that ‘more sustainable stuff’ will be seen as more cost and potentially expedite their downfall? In my world low cost sustainable mobility for spectators can be part of the solution. We need major sports events to continue - they inspire sports fans, they galvanise communities, they motivate participation.

Global Sustainable Sport's second feature this week focuses on World Sailing, one of the first international sports federations to publish their sustainability strategy. https://lnkd.in/eaKiDztC To set a strategy for their sustainability work, World Sailing first established a Sustainability Commission, made up of experts from within and outside the sport. From the outset, the Commission’s aims included establishing a ‘robust approach’ to sustainability; sharing best practice; setting standards and targets; and focusing on operations, events, and venues. Other goals included reducing World Sailing’s own carbon footprint, promoting diversity and accessibility, and ensuring ‘credibility and transparency’ through monitoring and reporting. The result of this initial work was the launch of World Sailing’s sustainability strategy, Agenda 2030, in 2017. The Paris Olympics sustainability team had about seven years to achieve their goal of radically reducing its greenhouse gas emissions compared with recent Olympic Games. For the growing number of organisations also committing to decarbonisation, meeting their goals can take a frustrating amount of time. In this article, Atalay Atasu and Luk N. Van Wassenhove share four useful lessons for these other organisations starting or progressing on their own decarbonisation journeys.

The Paris 2024 Olympics are gearing up to be a monumental event, not just in the world of sports, but also in the realm of environmental sustainability. Organizers are ambitiously aiming to halve the carbon footprint compared to past Games, a goal that speaks volumes about our growing global consciousness regarding climate change. This initiative is a testament to the fact that large-scale events can and should consider their environmental impact. However, the decision to hold surfing competitions in Tahiti, while reducing some emissions, has sparked debate about the trade-offs between lowering carbon emissions and protecting local ecosystems. While the math suggests fewer emissions, the environmental impact on marine life and the necessity of new construction, like the viewing tower, cannot be ignored. It's a complex equation where the ultimate goal is to minimize harm while reaping benefits. The Paris organizers' approach—utilizing existing or temporary facilities, sourcing local food, and relying on renewable energy—reflects a thoughtful and systematic strategy towards decarbonization. Yet, the critical voices, including concerns over sponsorships from carbon-intensive industries and the effectiveness of offsetting emissions, remind us that the journey towards true sustainability is fraught with challenges and complexities. The Paris Olympics could set a new standard for future international events, demonstrating that with innovation and commitment, it's possible to celebrate human achievements while also honoring our responsibility to the planet. The world will be watching closely, not just for the athletic prowess but also for the environmental legacy that these Games will leave behind. It's an exciting time in sports at the moment, with many world championships being held between now and the end of the year. That momentum will hit a high point in July 2024 when the world will gather for the Olympic Games. With climate change an ever-increasing impact on the planet, the environmental footprint of all sporting events is a valid concern that needs to be addressed, and events don’t come bigger than the Olympic Games. The Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 are stepping up to this challenge more than any Games before. And they are doing so by focusing first and foremost on reducing emissions... but how? Some of the initiatives being implemented at Paris 2024 are: 🏅 Minimising on new construction (around 95 per cent of venues will be 🏅 Pre-existing facilities, refurbished and modernised, where necessary or temporary structures) 🏅 Venues have also been specifically chosen so they can be accessed by public transport. You can read more about the Paris 2024 Organising Committee plans here. https://lnkd.in/gp-BYPJJ While your organisation might not be running an event quite as large as the Olympic Games, you still might want to get going on reducing your own environmental impacts, but not sure where to start. If you’d like to chat about what you can do to reduce your sport-related emissions, please reach out to us at Sports Environment Alliance by following the link below: https://lnkd.in/g3uXFXUi #FIFAGoingBeyond #FIFAGoingBeyond #NoPlanetNoPlay #SEA_theChange #PlanetMatters #NoPlanetB #Sport #SportandClimate #ClimageChange #ClimateChangeMitigation #ClimateEducation Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024
