Public opinion, climate change and the UK general election - Is there more that unites us, or more that divides us? So far, there doesnt seem to have been much from the political parties and wanna-be MPs in the run up to the UK general election on the environment and climate change. There has been a little on water quality and sewage dumping (which has been a problem for a while now...), but little else. What do the voters think? Fortunately, organisations such as Climate Barometer ask the public what they think, what climate issues concern them and whether they agree or disagree with the Net Zero policies and actions (Lots of results and articles at https://lnkd.in/eXBirPCX) A blog covering some of the highlights of recent public surveys - and answering the question whether there is more that unites or divides us - is at https://lnkd.in/e_aUtckX

Left unchallenged, the climate crisis will hurt us deeply. But if we take action now in a way that’s both fast and fair, we could change our lives for the better. Taking that more positive road towards climate action requires action everywhere. Councils all over Ireland have an important role to play. With less than three weeks to go until the local elections, now is a crucial time to let candidates know that climate will influence your vote! Take action today for a better world!✊If hundreds of us contact our council candidates today, we can help push climate action up the agenda in the councils formed after the elections. #localelections #iamaclimatevoter #fasterfairerclimateaction #eaction https://lnkd.in/eNdfVneX

The Woodland Trust in London today... There is no life without wildlife... Human activities have caused the world's wildlife populations to plummet by more than two-thirds in the last 50 years, according to a recent report from the World Wildlife Fund. The decline is happening at an unprecedented rate, the report warns, and it threatens human life as well. "The findings are clear," the report states. "Our relationship with nature is broken." The Living Planet Report 2020 report drew on wildlife monitoring of more than 4,300 different vertebrate species - mammals, fish, birds and amphibians - from around the world. It found that population sizes for those monitored species declined by an average of 68 percent from 1970 to 2016. See report: https://lnkd.in/ekzqEWeA
📢 Today 60,000 people marched through London to parliament to direct a powerful message to all the UK’s political parties – that they must #RestoreNatureNow. 🌳 The march is thought to be the biggest public demonstration in the #GeneralElection run-up and shows the strength of public opinion on the need for stronger political action to tackle the nature and climate crisis. 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/ehpm46zb

Clear evidence of climate fatigue emerges from recent opinion polls on voting intentions in the next European parliament elections, in June 2024. While European green parties are expected to lose more than a third of their seats, rightwing climate-sceptic conservatives are expected to win big. This shift in public sentiment may even result in the EU backtracking on its so-called green deal, a core policy that has defined Ursula von der Leyen’s term as president of the European Commission. Scepticism is widespread within the member states whose governments call the shots in the EU. https://lnkd.in/dRAipZEP
