The mining sector provides many benefits to the people of Ghana, including jobs and income. But the sector can also harm people’s health, biodiversity and the environment. The law has a vital role to play in minimising these negative impacts and protecting the rights of local communities. With our Ghanaian partner – TaylorCrabbe Initiative – we have undertaken extensive legal research and drafted four briefings to gain a better understanding of the legal landscape regulating mining in Ghana. We identify the loopholes and suggest policy reform solutions to ensure the sector provides real added value to the country in social, economic and environmental terms:

We’re sending a warning letter to 71 airlines over potential greenwashing, after KLM’s loss in court. After KLM's greenwashing was found illegal earlier this year, in a case taken by Fossielvrij NL and Reclame Fossielvrij that we supported, we’re sending a legal warning letter to 71 other airlines operating out of Schiphol airport, including: ✈ Ryanair ✈ Lufthansa ✈ Delta ✈ American Airlines ✈ British Airways ✈ Easyjet ✈ Etihad ✈ Cathay Pacific Airways ✈ Qatar Airways ✈ Singapore Airlines ✈ Turkish Airlines The letter warns that they should not be promoting common industry claims about ‘sustainable aviation fuels’, ‘offsetting’ and ‘net zero by 2050’ as they are likely to be unlawful. ClientEarth greenwashing lawyer Johnny White said: “The misleading sustainability claims pushed by KLM and found unlawful by the Dutch Court come straight from the wider industry’s greenwashing playbook to keep air traffic growing as the climate crisis escalates. “Airlines continuing to promote these misleading messages do so in breach of the law. The Dutch ruling set clear red lines for the aviation sector’s climate PR strategy. The new UK government has an urgent task on its hands, as the CCC’s latest report on emissions reduction progress shows that the UK remains far off-track to meeting its legally binding targets. The report, released today, found that the UK has credible plans in place for only a third of the emissions reductions required for its 2030 target and for just a quarter of the reductions required to meet its carbon budget starting in 2033. The Committee has presented the government with ten recommendations to put the country back on track, including reversing last year’s rollback on existing emissions-saving measures. Key also is the delivery of a new climate plan by next May, which the former government was ordered to do by the High Court, following our successful legal challenge in May this year. “This report makes it unequivocally clear that despite positive early steps, an urgent task lies before this new government – fortunately the action we need to see would benefit people across the UK. “The good news is many of the solutions are already available to this government. Comprehensive action on home insulation and large-scale public transport investments would slash UK emissions and make a serious dent in addressing the cost-of-living crisis facing many households,” Sam Hunter Jones, ClientEarth lawyer
