⚠️The world’s forests are in danger, and so is the EU law that protects them. Just a year ago, the European Parliament and EU countries overwhelmingly voted in support of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Now, some lawmakers want to delay the deforestation law and water it down. Why we need this law: The EUDR helps ensure the products we consume in the EU aren’t linked to deforestation or forest degradation. This law has been on the statute books for over a year already and European companies will have to start complying with it in the next six months. Talking about delay will only create uncertainty and undermine the investments that responsible companies have already made to become compliant. Deforestation has not gone away. The EUDR has been negotiated and agreed. EU decision-makers must now focus on its swift and thorough implementation, not further time-wasting. [Credits: Fern NGO]
The urgency of protecting our forests cannot be overstated. The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is crucial in ensuring that products consumed in the EU are not linked to deforestation or forest degradation. Efforts to delay or weaken this law undermine the progress made and create uncertainty for companies already working to comply. The EUDR has been established and agreed upon; now is the time for swift and thorough implementation. What steps can we take to support the enforcement of the EUDR and prevent further delays?
Without the EUDR, the EU countries will continue to lose tens of billions of tax proceeds in the areas of VAT, personnel tax, and corporate tax. Products linked to deforestation replace EU production, reduces the taxable value in the supply chain, and destroys jobs. Profundo made calculations for illegal logging.

1w#RealityCheck: "Overall, approximately 75% of euro area banks’ corporate loans (nearly €3.24 trillion) to the 4.2 million euro area (companies) are highly dependent on at least one ecosystem service." (European Central Bank, 2023) Nature dies > Ecosystem Services die > Companies' production decelerates/ halts > Companies default > Banks default > Financial System collapses > etc. The EPP has actively been working and voting against the NRL, the CSRD, the CSDDD, and the EUDR, thereby putting a brake on progress in the digital and sustainable transformation of the EU. Our economy must be transformed first to realize the EU's new strategic goal of a competitive economy. We need markets that stimulate financial flows into nature restoration, regenerative business models, and sustainable business practices. Obviously, we need regulations, too. If companies don't evolve from the extraction-based status quo on their own accord. Nature and climate must become central aspects of our economy - implementing the Green Deal is the absolute minimum.
